How often do you feed your worms?

A lot of you say you feed food scraps when the old scraps were eaten. Since I feed horse manure, I don't know the difference between eaten-up and not eaten-up manure.

So, I decided to feed once a week.

How often do you feed them? Do you know have a set schedule? Do you feed everyday? Perhaps twice a week?

I feed food scraps whenever I have them in a whatever amout I have after all they work for me(:

Now on manure I'm not sure what to say once a week sounds good as long as your worms look good

it's kind of hard as the old food seems to oxidize and looks a lot like bedding after a week. I have been going by smell~ if I can still smell fruit or vegetable peelings or coffee grounds, I will wait another day or two to feed the worms.
I still don't feed all that much, though, as I only have about sixty worms! (An definate increase on the forty I started with, and man, those little guys eat! up to about a 1/2 cup a week~ a lot for these critters. However, with all the worm cocoons placed in the bin by my 'herd' this past month, I figure this will definately have to be increased by after Christmas.

There as many techniques for fertilizing plants as there are gardeners ;-) You are realizing that by reading the info provided by various 'expert' sources as well as various opinions. More or less they are all correct ;-) If anything I would err on the side of underfertilizing so ferting with every watering is not something I would do unless the plants were very lackluster in their performance in comparison to what I thought they should be doing. For example, a heavy blooming annual may slow down it's blooming. Give it a feeding and a week later it is in full bloom again. Experiences like this, over time, will give you a sense of what, how much and how often more so than any routine, one size fits all schedule will. I think a good 'starting plan' is to mix in a little slow release fertilzer (get one that is labelled as a "complete" food meaning it has micronutrients in it instead of just N-P-K) and then use a fert mixed with water every couple weeks at half strength. From here, alter the frequency and strength and wait a couple weeks to observe how the plants respond. It's a bit more complicated in that some plants need really high fertility and others very little so knowing a bit about the plants you are growing (you can just divide them into low, normal and high) for their fert needs helps. But, this comes with time as well. No worries, err on the side of caution with ferts and everything will work out fine. Waaay easier to cause problems with over ferting than under ferting.

I moved into my house last year. So have making a pile of boxes, as we slowly unpack and get settled. The recycle bin is always full so I couldn't figure out how to get rid of them. In addition we have 6 people, 4 dogs, and 2 cats living here so the waste bin is also always full, and with a ever growing pile next to it. This year the spring rain hit, and within 2 days we had weeds up to our knees. To say the least the green waste bin couldn't handle the load, so last week we started our first compost heap. Until yesterday it was only a pile of green weeds and roots, and I turned it every time I added more. I didn't know about the brown waste, and thought I still had to put the cardboard in the recycle. :) Well now that I know its 2 brown : 1 green, I'm glad I have so much card board, and junk mail. ;) Yesterday I didn't know about layering, so I turned the brown with the green. I don't have a shredder so this was difficult. In 24 hours I've learned so much about it. Now I have a 3'x3'x2' heap with the original green waste on the bottom, and lots of brown on top, I also just been throwing my kitchen waste in it, no meat or bones, but just about everything else. I also found a bag of rotting chicken feed, a stack of soaked egg crates and a bin of mealworms and beetles from a failed project to raise mealworms and crickets from last year. lol. In storage I had an old thick and really heavy area rug that my mother once loved, but is now so stained that I had no trepidations on using it to cover my pile. We still have 2/3 of the weeds to go, and at least 2x that mass of boxes from the move. So by the end of this week my heap will probably be about 4'x4'x'4, if not larger, luckily the area I have for it is 7'x7'. The funny thing is our yard is very small, so I only have room for the one pile, and I'm planning on going hot, mostly because I understand and trust the bacterial process better for it than the cold. So I mostly expect to turn it whenever it gets cold. Even better though and maybe even a little saddening is that I'm actually excited to have a way to dispose of all of our waste, that the city's bins just couldn't handle. Ok done with my book.

I also raise Euros, my experience has been that the more i root around in the bain the more crispies i find the next morning. They arent quite as tolerant as other species to being disturbed. I also am running an experiment bin with regualra nightcrawlers. They also do not tolerate too much disruption. I can usually fin enough in the top 3-4 inches of my bins to satisfy anyones curiousity, so when asked that is about all the bedding i move around. Most of the info ive read says that red wigglers are more tolerant to being disrupted. So i guess it basically comes down to which species you are raising. Bryan

DH is a contractor and he does not like his customers to feel obligated to provide lunch for him and his crew. If they provide a lunch unexpectedly, he will graciously accept it. If they do it a second time, he will again graciously accept what is provided, but explain to the customer that lunches are neither expected or necessary and that he and his crew bring their own lunches every day. If a client provides a surprise lunch, that means that everyone has to throw away the lunch they brought with them that day. Also, eating the lunch that is provided by the client often takes more time than the crew normally spends eating lunch. Doing that every day can really throw your schedule off. It is better to do as one poster said and tell your contractor, "I'd like to buy you all lunch tomorrow." That said, a plate of cookies or a pitcher of lemonade is always appreciated by the crew, but making it a habit is not really good for anyone ... the client feels obligated and the crew learns to expect it. DH does not appreciate so much when clients want to provide beer to the crew. They are there to work, not drink. If they want to drink, they can do so on their own time after hours.

I feed pre-rotted food scraps 2-3 times a week. I estimate I have ~2 lbs. of worms, so theoretically I could feed them 4-6 lbs. each time. But with cooler temps I'm playing it safe and only giving them 2-3 lbs. each feeding.

beesee, are you giving them fresh manure? I've heard that can heat things up. That may be a good thing in cold weather, but it might be good to check the temps. Once a week sounds like a safe schedule. How much are you giving them & how many pounds of worms do you have?

When you say manure are you adding fresh or composted manure- adding too much fresh at once can cause heating of your bin. Other than that manure is a fairly safe feed and you're unlikely to over feed. A fairly safe way of feeding is to only add a couple of inches at once, feed the bin in strips so if things get bad the worms can retreat, and give the next feed when the worms Have moved into the previous feed (as opposed to just feeding off the bottom of it.)

I feed kitchen scraps and feed once a day. There are 4 corners and 4 sides to my bin, so I rotate around. As they seem to be eating more I up the number of ounces I feed each day.

I'll say first off that you are so lucky to have some horse manure. Ok i'm really jealous now! I feed 2 to 3 times a week. I have three bins and feed a lot of coffee grounds. How long have you had your worms? I would really like to see them. Ill bet they are breeding like flies down in all that horse poo. Have fun with your worms Steve

plumiebear, the horse manure I got is not totally fresh, but it doesn't look completely aged either. I haven't had a problem of heat. I originally had two pounds but I see worms all over now in 55 gallon drum bin.

stevesd, Horse manure seems to make a difference. They appear to be very vigorous. And as you said, they are breeding rapidly. It is really amazing!!

Gina, you say you have 60 worms... How do you know? lol. I look into my bin and I see food, bedding, and a few worms, but I know there are several hundred I don't see...
