Use native or non-native worms

I'm a newbie and I was wondering what species of worm is best for composting and vermiculture. Here is one article that mentions possible problems for our native worms survival by introducing new species to an area: http://www.wormdigest.org/content/view/400/1/

I used to fish with red worms from the bait shop and some gray worms from my garden in Sacramento. The gray worms were built tougher and stayed on the hook better and caught more fish.

1. Has anybody out there had experience with species other than the worm ranch species available?

2. What is good or bad about natives in vermicomposting?
