Thanks for the information. Purchased this tree from a local store this year and didn't spray it this year. My other trees are looking pretty good. Is there anything I can do for it during the growing season to help it out? Thanks!!

I agree that the leaf coloration is normal; it's typical of many varieties. The holes -- particularly in the first photo -- look to me like what's called "mechanical damage." Think of it as the leaf being battered by something (could be rain, hail, other plants, kids' toys, careless people or animals -- or perhaps only wind) and/or being battered against something (plant stakes, fence, ground, container or raised bed walls, other plants, etc.). If it were insect damage, there would be more leaf surface missing. If it were disease damage, there would be visible abnormalities or general decline in all parts of the plant or over the entire plant. Another Update Plants have definitely improved, are probably twice the size they were in the original pics, and have filled out quite a bit. While they're behind, fruit is beginning to set. On several plants I've pinched off the lower branches / leaves (a good foot off the ground) due to them yellowing and dying. The upper 2/3rds of the plants are a nice dark healthy green. They are continuing to grow - but I'm keeping a close eye on the lower leaves. While I've lost some lower sections of the plants, those where the leaves have died off (or branches I've removed b/c of it) have new green growths sprouting. Christy ^^ I too didn't want to fertilize much, especially considering I purchased some really good compost. I don't know if it's the change in weather or the fact that I fertilized but the plants look much better now. I doubt overwatering is my problem as I've held off this year. They only get water when the soil is very dry. I'll try to take some new pics in the next day or so. Joe

Hi Tracy, I took the plants out of the soil and washed the roots. They were also suffering from a mealybug infestation, so there was damage to the leaves -- some were yellowing and dying -- but I'm not sure if that was caused by the mealybugs or the yellow fungus stuff. I've found similar yellow stuff in a couple other pots. This pot had the most extensive infestation. The soil was moist, but not soaking wet. I removed the mealybugs, removed damaged leaves and stems and washed the roots of the plant. The root system didn't appear out of the ordinary. The yellow fungus is not visible until I dig up the plants because it's underground around the roots. Some of the stems on the plant (Portulaca Molokiniesis) were shriveling, but, again, I don't know if that was because of the mealybugs.
