Rose of Sharon- vs- bugs
Comments (2)Beebees, If those are the same black aphids that I fight in the spring on my honeysuckle and Dames Rocket, they can be very damaging and hard to get rid of. A hard spray of water will remove some of them. While I seldom spray for pests, this is one that I do spray for. I use a Bayer garden spray that can be attached to your hose and that contains imidacloprid. This is a strong pesticide and you should take care to not get it on you. As it kills ALL insects, I only spray where I have the problem in order to minimize damage to good bugs....See MorePlease...the difference between Rose of Sharon and...
Comments (2)I'm 99% sure the rose of sharon will bloom longer. I have one and it blooms from mid-summer on. It would bloom earlier, but it only gets afternoon sun. A neighbor has a confederate rose and it doesn't bloom until mid-fall. Barb...See MoreConfederate Rose
Comments (1)Confederate rose is hibiscus mutabilis. Rose of Sharon is hibiscus syriacus. CR is originally from the area of China and was brought to the US with the China trade of the early 1800s. It was already well distributed in the South during the U.S. Civil War (a.k.a.; the War of Northern Aggression, LOL!) Not being familiar with it, the Yankees called it Confederate Rose. It is root hardy in zone 7 where it is killed back to the ground by winter but grow to 10 feet by Fall. It blooms in late summer or early Fall. I haven't seen any with blooms this year but I attribute that to the severe drought conditions and HOT, HOT summer temps. We had a a long spell of 100+ temps and we are still over 20 inches short of water this year. We were in drought condition last year as well. My double white CR is only about 6-7 feet tall and very straggly this year. The double pink was watered more and looks better than the white but still no blooms. If you would like to try some CR, let me know. Maybe we can work out a trade....See MoreConfederate rose
Comments (20)i guess it's a variety of hibiscus.if anyone's interested i have two other varieties, african rose and autum rose. the african rose has red leaves, like a red maple, the blooms are pink to maroom in the center. the leaves are used in salads, the flowers are used in "red zinger tea". the autum rose blooms are deep velvety maroon, tha leaves are mostly green, the stalks have sharp barbs on them. both blooms are about 4 to 5+ inches across, where there is a leaf there will be a bloom, they will grow to over 10 ft. they can be trimmed to 4' hi,or any hight desired. i get frost here over the winter, they will die back, then grow from the root in the spring. every bloom will produce a seed pod, which contain 10 to 15 seeds, one season's growth will produce dozens of blooms. i also grow orchid trees, am in the process of sendind some to s.c. to see if they thrive there....See Moreplantmaven
