If you've never been to a plant swap...

...boy, are you missing out! I just went to my first swap Saturday, and I can't believe I've lived this long without one! I brought my big, burly football-playing 16-year old to help me lug stuff around. I thought it would be a drudgery for him, but when we got in the car to leave after 4 hours of freezing weather and hard-core swapping, he announced, "We ARE going to the fall swap!" If even HE had a good time, chances are, you will too. :-)

Thanks, CarolAnn! Believe me, I've been eyeing it. If my neck and back recover in time from all the planting of the last couple days, I'll be there! At the present, I'm sitting at the computer because I can't move. : )

Welcome Clodsley! Thank you for joining. You will love the swaps. Labels are vital - I cut up old miniblinds and use a garden marker. Use what you have. Plastic knives and spoons work well too. As for pots, if you cannot spare any of your pots, dig a plant and wrap the rootball in wet newspaper and place it in a plastic bag. As for the how the swap works, there is a link somewhere at the top of this forum. Be sure to check each of our pages to see if you want something from our trade lists. We can arrange private swaps before the swap starts.

I would like to try Hollyhock, but it seems to have so many disease problems. I would love to try many plants but I just cannot tolerate floppiness. So I am hesitant to add Cosmos and Foxgloves to the garden as much as I love them. Cameron, here in Winston I am growing five Dahlias this year. I have a pink-orange daisy type that I bought at a nursery two years ago that overwintered in its pot the first year. It overwintered in the ground last year. I also have Ellen Houston which I bought at Lowe's last summer that overwintered in the ground; it was labeled as perennial. Interestingly, this year they were selling it as an annual, zone 9 I think! I added Ginger Willo, Crazy Legs, and Crossfield Ebony this year. I don't do anything too special to them (if they look really sad but don't need water I may mist the leaves) and they flower from June until frost. Well, I should say that I cover up the emerging spouts at night when they first pop out of the ground because slugs like them and I don't cut down the stocks after freezing to protect the tubers from water. I don't do any of the special preening and pruning because I am not trying to grow show flowers. You should give them a try!

Nope - you are not the first - you are too young. We have the lady in our club who tried it 30 years ago and ended with a nice crop of mealies. If it is not mealies - I am so very glad! But just in case - take the magnifying glass and check if your fungus "rice grains" do not have legs. Hugs TGIF -time to go home Irina

He sure did! Bless his heart, he worked harder than I did! I'll cut and paste what I said on the swap thread, exchange forum:

"He claimed the roses, ferns, cannas, umbrella plant and crinums, and said those are HIS beds, and he worked them all by himself while I planted the rest. With Carrie's and your help, a gardener has been born! :-)"

I agree--I want him to be as effectively hooked as I am. :-) We stood together at about 4:30 today and watched the hail come crashing down on our gardens and all our hard work and our beloved plants, and prayed for it to stop, which it did immediately. Thank God! Houston was in a panic and was about to brave the hail, rain, wind and lightning to go save his plants!

Oh, I hope there wasn't much damage, but as early in the season as it is, they will rebound in no time at all.

After it stopped raining, I took a walk around to survey any damage. I didn't see any. :-) Can't wait to get back out there! DH gave me a 20-minute shoulder/back rub while we watched the Rangers. That, along with some Tylenol, should make me good to go by morning!
