Lind, I spray all of my grapes since I have a few disease-susceptible ones and while spraying I hit them all. I didn't have enough room so gave my Steuben to my neighbor a few years ago. Its only a couple feet from my property and it always looks fine even though they never spray it. So it will probably do OK. I think its an excellent eating grape with a unique spicy flavor, but it has seeds which is a big downside these days. Most fuzzy kiwis don't ripen but Saanichton has been ripening well for me. I am trying several varieties of early ripening fuzzy kiwi to get the best one and Saanichton is the only one that has fruited. The hardy kiwis are also liked by many people but my kids won't eat them and they are my indicators of what average Americans like. I have some more hardy kiwi varieties ripening this year and maybe there will be one that my kids like. My kids do like muscadines, I was surprised. I had to pull mine up a few years ago to make room for another experiment I was doing but I plan on eventually putting some back in. Scott

How about Passiflora "Incense?" It's hardy here in Zone 7, you can cut the vines down each year and it still blooms in the summer (guess it blooms on "new wood"), and the flowers are fragrant and beautiful. The only thing you need to worry about is the fact that passifloras send up suckers all over the place - so you might want to sink a barrier of some kind around the plants when you put them in the ground. I have had one die once, though - it was heaved out of the ground during a spring thaw & freeze cycle. morning glories and their relatives moonflowers and cypress vine may throw seed everywhere. I have cypress vine coming up in various places in my yard where it hasn't been planted for three years. Unless you actually want random reseeders, Cardinal vine which is a hybrid of Cypress vine would be a better choice for an annual vine as it doesn't reseed for us up here. It took two years to get rid of the morning glorie volunteers. Nasturtiums are gorgeous but they are an aphid magnet so you may not want those on a pergola that you will be sitting underneath. I had to rip out my naturtiums this year because the aphids were so bad. Scarlet runner been will also provide you with beans that you can harvest while the pods are still young. Another annual vine is Hyacinth Bean vine. It has purplish green leaves with pinksh purple flowers and deep reddish purple seed pods and is used by butterflies and hummers. Penny
