best way to clean up dead morning glories

This year I planted morning glories to grow on a chain link fence across the back and they are gorgeous! Very lush growth, beautiful flowers now that they're finally blooming. My question: which is the easier way to remove dead vines when they are killed by frost? Should I remove them while they are still flexible or wait until they are brittle?

I personally find it easier to remove them when they are still flexible.

Thanks. Another question: can the vines go into a compost pile? If so, do they need to be cut up or can a whole glop of vines be added?

Thank you for all your replies. What beautiful blooms you have Lynne. Now, that's the kind of result I'm looking for. This year I have a mixture of Heavenly Blue, an MG mix, and Cardinal Climber in a large pot (same as last year). This year I have seen only flowers from the mix (same as last year), but only a few. Today was the biggest show - about five flowers - so maybe as Sharon said, they won't put on a show until later in August. They sure didn't last year. I'll cut back on the watering - maybe every second day from now on. Thanks for the germination information Hoghaven, but I absolutely refuse to grow anything under lights since my introduction to winter sowing, especially because of my experience this year with tomatoes which all became infected with whitefly. I had to 'borrow' plants from friends with whom I had shared my heirloom seeds. Next year I'll be experimenting with a modified cold-frame method I recently heard about. But I just checked my journal and I sowed my MG May 23, so perhaps I could sow them earlier and cover with black plastic (as I do for Gomphrena) and see what happens. My plants are way up my trellis and climbing over the arbor over my gate, so I don't have a problem with the plants growing, just the flower production. I just have to be patient and see what happens. Thanks again. Northerner.

luis_pr, Consider talking to the manager or a cashier near the garden center, and haggle for a lower price. Nothing is lost if you don't get a discount. What is lost, are plants that will die, unfortunately. I try to convince them that the plant is on its "last legs" or it's the only one or one of a few that are remaining and almost ready to be trashed. Would be better to be saved from dying than ending up in a dumpster. Annuals are on discount, but if they are dried up, they may not be worth trying to save. It depends upon who's the manager or if the cashier has the authority to give discounts. Our Walmart has a check out, near the garden center. After awhile, you get to figure out which cashiers can do that for a customer. After experiencing years of two lace caps not blooming, until this summer, I'm very surprised that last summer's discounted, small hydrangea has a few blooms. In my opinion, compost really nourishes them.

Can morning glory and moonvine be grown this way?

I really have a lot of space (clay dirt), but I took out my above ground pool this spring and a small portion of deck that lead to the pool. There was a support post for the edge of the decking that I left in the ground to fashion a trellis. I planted moonvine (for evening appeal) and supposed to be Milky Way MG (for day/morning). I probably over-planted, but I do like the effect. Next year, I'll plant the moonvine on the wine trellis instead of mandevilla. I drilled holes in the post every 18 in or so (took some muscle and a ladder for me), sawed up and old broom stick into 20 in lengths and secured the broom sticks in the drilled holes with a screw. I used some small wire and started working my way up, looping the wire around the broom sticks. I think I put 2 or 3 wires on each side of the post. I saw this done at a commercial pond place, they planted clematis last year and mg, it was lush and full. The had a nice "topper" on theirs, I put a gargole on mine and he's now stuck in the vines (blown into them from a storm). I noticed this year, they didn't plant the mg, and the clematis is creeping. I'm sure it will look much better next year. Hope some of you can utilize my post idea to your advantage.-B

Almost anything organic can be composted. An ideal mix breaks down quicker with smaller pieces, but there is no reason why you can't just toss your vines on your compost pile. You just may need to fork it around a bit more when you add other material and wait a bit longer .

The frost has killed enough of the vines so they don't look pretty anymore so I took them down this afternoon. It was not as hard as I thought it would be. The vine's original stem was wound through the fence in its way to the top, but once it got to the top, it just lay on top and other vine growth lay on top of that. It was indeed a tangled mass of vines but it wasn't attached to the fence, other than the first stem. I cut some vines up and added them to my compost pile with shredded leaves but I have a huge ball of tangled vines that I'm going to leave in a pile by itself. I put it next to the compost pile so hopefully the two piles will help heat each other. I'm glad I got them off while the vines were flexible. It was fairly easy to get the vines off that were wound through the fence. I snipped every few inches and unwound the pieces.
