Can morning glory and moonvine be grown this way?

Running out of room to plant more morning glory and moonvines next year. wonder if this will work. growing both morning glory and moonvines in 10-12 inch pots and let them climb up a beautiful white pine that I have on the side of the house. It gets plenty of sun, just not sure if there is a problem with the acidity of the the pine needles.

What do you think.

I've tried these kind of things, but they don't work well. It may help to just choose which MG's you really prefer, and just grow them. :) arum

Don't know about the effect of the pine needles, but growing MG's in pots should help place them in areas where you want them. In looking at some of the sites showing Japanese MG displays, it appears that growing in pots is fairly common over in that country. Evidently they snip and trim and baby their plants to get BIG blooms. Can't remember seeing pictures from Japan showing the profuse number of blooms that come from many morning glories planted in the ground.

1. Morning glories don't like cold. Perhaps you put them out too soon. I haven't even sown mine yet. 2. As I recall, MGs like to be in the sun, but their roots shaded (accomplished by the mere fact of the plant growing.) Start another batch in a week or two, then put them outside. (Or do them 'winter sowing' style already outside in a milk-jug) Enjoy! I've got the REs in my stash to do, too.

I've grown MGS in a 6" pot (3 plants) and they flourished! Granted, they were toatally root-bound and it seemed like I was watering them every minute, but you can't argue with this, can you? This homemade trellis (bamboo stakes) was about 8' above the pot, and you can see that the vines grew way past the top of the trellis. The watering issue? I ended up making a "collar" of water (frozen) in a plastic bag for the pot; put tiny pinholes in the plastic. As the sun melted the ice, the plant got water all day and I didn't have to come home in the evening to a totally wilted plant. I've also grown them, successfully, in windowboxes that were even shallower than yours. PV

alaMel, There are as many answers to that as there are answerers. Even variables like your climate and how often you plan to water will play a part in determining which mixes would work best. I'd recommend doing some reading over at the Container Gardening forum. Al's mixes may be a little overboard for growing Morning Glories, but the thread is just packed with useful info that can help you make better decisions on potting mediums (see link below). Thanks to all for your great advise. Only hope it's not to late as there is very little new growth (green) with which to get new starts, Will try cutting back ....but if so only thing left will be stalks which are not green. The 3 flowers & leaves are at the top of the plant, Will the stalks grow without any leaves left? Guess I'm left with not much of a choice. Meanwhile in case it doesn;t work can anyone tell me where they purchased as I haven't seen them anywhere for sale? Espec.looking for the pink.... pictures are just gorgeous !

I have moonflower vine & morning glories planted in the ground, growing up Holly bushes(trees)
The moonflower vine is doing great, blooming like crazy.
I saw the 1st few morning glory blooms yesterday(Scarlet O'Hara)but they didn't open this morning!?
They look nice, but are a pain when it gets cold & they die & you have these dead vines all over the holly bushes!
I love it now, but will regret doing it come November when I have to get all these dead vines down.....
Guess I'll never learn!? I did it last year too.

Another idea that does work & you may want to keep it in mind?
We have a really small yard with a tiny porch.
I have fishing line from the top of the porch to the back
fence(up high enough so you don't walk into it)and another line from the top of one of the holly bushes(trees) to the porch.
The moonflower vine is growing along the fishing line they do get heavy & the line is drooping a bit!
The morning glory is on the other line.

I have another morning glory in a pot with 3 bamboo sticks
crisscrossed like a teepee. This one has dark purple flowers (Grandpa Otts or??)

USe your imagination & alot of fishing line!!

Fishing line is a good idea. I use cord that comes off of big round hay bales. Works real good for vines to climb on, tying back leaning plants, etc.

I really have a lot of space (clay dirt), but I took out my above ground pool this spring and a small portion of deck that lead to the pool. There was a support post for the edge of the decking that I left in the ground to fashion a trellis. I planted moonvine (for evening appeal) and supposed to be Milky Way MG (for day/morning). I probably over-planted, but I do like the effect. Next year, I'll plant the moonvine on the wine trellis instead of mandevilla.

I drilled holes in the post every 18 in or so (took some muscle and a ladder for me), sawed up and old broom stick into 20 in lengths and secured the broom sticks in the drilled holes with a screw. I used some small wire and started working my way up, looping the wire around the broom sticks. I think I put 2 or 3 wires on each side of the post. I saw this done at a commercial pond place, they planted clematis last year and mg, it was lush and full. The had a nice "topper" on theirs, I put a gargole on mine and he's now stuck in the vines (blown into them from a storm). I noticed this year, they didn't plant the mg, and the clematis is creeping. I'm sure it will look much better next year. Hope some of you can utilize my post idea to your advantage.-B

Bonbon, that pic is a beauty, great ideas. You have all made me see the white pine is not a good idea. Bonbon, you inspired me to see what I can reuse around the house and yard for more room. Presto, down in the cellar found the old, and I mean old, badmitton nets from when the kids where young (22 and 27 now) and the poles to hold the net in place.
New idea for next year. Put the poles for the badmitton net in the ground, Patch what ever is necessary on the nets with twine and put one on the lower end of the poles and one at the top of the poles and use pieces of twine in between the 2 nets where there is a space. In another area of the yard am gonna try some old, really tall plant stakes and tie twine between them and weave it in as well. That should work, I think. Must be more stuff in my cellar and maybe even can find some stuff on freecycle to use to. Thanks for the info and the ideas to reuse all that I can. Oh, have plenty of old broom handles too.
