Ronnie, DANG! When I click, nothing happens. :(

I planted a number of MG's this year. I'm just posting pics, not names. Some of these might be doubles and I have a few others that I haven't taken pics of yet. Many of my MG's were late blooming this season, along with many of my other plants.

Here are pics of mine, still have many that haven't bloomed yet, but are full of buds. Crazy weather all summer hasn't helped them bloom either. Just hope that I will have time to get seeds before frost sets in.

Will post names and flower size on most of them as well.

Great shots Fran. The Sydney is looking good!! I really like the ruffled edge purple/blue, I have a similar one.

Fran I have a number of vines that just started blooming also. I think the crazy cold spring on the East Coast set everything back this year. I hope next spring isn't a repeat.

Karyn and Ronnie, hold on to seeds and I'll be holding on to mine. See what we can set up for some trades after we know what we have in seeds.

Here's a tip about getting seeds to ripen if they are still green and facing hard frosts.
Ron sent me this tip last year and it really worked.

Cut off the vine with the pods on it. remove leaves from the stems and label the stem with the MG name. Then place it in a glass of water and put the glass where it will get plenty of light and some sun if possible. Change the water if necessary and keep an eye on the pods to ripen.
Most of mine worked this way last year and the seeds germinated in the spring and grew true to the parent plant.
Have a feeling I'm going to have lots and lots of stems in water this year. It's already getting really cool and night and lots of MG still haven't bloomed yet, and others are full of really green pods.

Thanks Ron. This MG had the name Cornell but I think the seeds got mixed up (their from a trade). There are more blooms coming so I'll take more pictrues as they open.

I like the unusual gray from a trade too that said chocolate or purple, turns out to be neither. I'm tagging the blooms as they open & taking pictures. So far only two blooms and the seed seems to take long time to mature. I'll be glad to trade with you. Hopefully it'll keep blooming and I'm checking it every day.

helena_z8_ms - The bloom you posted as possibly Rebecca is an Ipomoea nil...and by the way the colors look it appears to be taken after the pigments have started to breakdown...what time of day was the photo taken(?)...

Can you get a frontal view earlier(?) in the day(?)...

The more I look at the purple frosty one above the more it is looking like one of Emmas...she has a plethora of various fogs,mists,haze and other inter-related colors...

She's probably the best one to pin that one down more precisely...

No names here, either, since I'm not sure what they are and it doesn't really matter to me anyway... they are pretty nonetheless. Finally have some seeds from the "chocolate" ones - yay! Will be interesting to see what they grow out next year. The top three pictured are from the same purple vine - except that Sydney in the very first shot that snuck into the picture from above. :-)

I didn't get a picture of the very pale pink JMG that bloomed one flower at a time, but there's a pod on it so it's a mutt I guess. And two plants came up in the last month and a half, and one of them put out a pretty picotee bloom right on top of about 4 leaves and maybe 2 inches of stem... I guess it realized it didn't have time to waste.

These have been fun to watch over the summer. I'll be doing it again next year, but differently. No MGs in hanging pots for me... it's too dry here. I suspect they will do best in the ground, like my cypress vine and cardinal climber did the year before... didn't need any help from me to take over the fence. :-)

BlueBars: I have 3 pics posted, the 2nd pic you have to move the arrow to the right to see it. The blue one is Hatsu Arashi. I'm sorry my pics are too big, when my husband gets back home, he'll have show me how to how to make the pictures smaller like everyone else. I tried but it didn't work.
Next year I plan to use a few big buckets like Filix!!

I'm swiping Filix's bucket method too! My local Price Chopper bakery usually has white 3-4 gallon buckets for free any time I come asking for them, the icing for their cakes comes in those and they keep them for wackos like me. ;-) I planted tomatoes in them this year, worked very well. Next year I can use them for tomatoes *and* morning glories... will be nice to be able to move them around if needed.

I'm hankering for the blues suddenly. Helena's Hatsu Arashi is beautiful. Filix, what is that sweet turquoise one on the right in the top picture? It looks downright friendly! Is that Heavenly Blue?

The ones in the top right are heavenly blues. The pots are actualy 15 gallon nursey containers. They were black. I painted them so they wouldn't get too hot.If you use the soil mix I made You will like it. The base on those MG are twice the size of my thumb. Thankyou for the kind words. filix

I'm wondering if something is going on with the MG seeds we are buying over the last few years.

I used to be able to grow MG like heavenly blue in poor garden soil and they where big, lush and full.

Last few years, growing in the same location, with the same soil, I have poor spinling growth with blooms but not a lot of them.

Now the ones that I grew in pots are Japanese varieties and the soil is pure miracle grow potting mix. they have grown huge and lush but contained in growth by wrapping vines around each other. I friend of mine grew her heavenly blue in a 5 gallon bucket with just miracle grow potting mix and hers is huge as well.

Some reading I've done on growing MG this past summer, has said that the japanese varieties especially do better with some fertilizer. Hmm. My pots are full of fertilizer with the miracle grow soil and they are huge.

Next years plans are this. For the ones that I still want on my chain link fenced in yard area. Nice size holes, dug at least a 12 inches deep, minimum of 4 inches wide, and full of miracle grow potting mix, before the seedlings go in the ground. The pots will have the same miracle grow potting mix in them. No more just dig a hole and put them in the ground.
A month after planting in the ground, fertilized with more miracle grow fertilizer. Seems, for me that soil has made all the difference.

Will get a bunch of pics later today of the MG in pots and post those pics, vs the ones in the ground.

Thanks Ron. The lable said Rosita but it looked so much like MT Fuji to me except that the flowers were a lot smaller. This lable says Haru no Hikari, it looks a little darker than Hatsu Arashi.

Helen 0 The dark blue bloom you posted just above looks exactly like Hatsu Arashi to me...

Haru no Hikari is a light pink flower with a white throat...

Didn't get a chance until now to post these comparison pics of MG grown in the ground and the same ones in 12 pots with miracle grow potting mix for the soil. The plants don't look as great as they did about 2 weeks ago, temps have been really cold and they weren't blooming when I took the pics.

The Bush Morning Glories are one of my favorites also... Now if only I could figure out how to overwinter them. Even though I have a small green house they rarely make it until the next spring and I have to start all over again from seed...

Some new MG blooms from this week

Heian yosooi 4" flower

Sunsmile blue. 2" flower

Silky blue, 3 1/2" flower. Pic taken as the flower began to change color later in the day. The blue is the actual color of the flower, turns to the pink late in the day.

From a trade of seeds labeled "plum frost mix". The actual color is a dark purple, my camera won't pic up the dark purple color. It is really pretty, 3" flower

This is from the same packet of plum frost mix seeds. Don't know what the name is but it is really a beauty. 3 1/2-4" flower.

Floating cloud. 4-4 1/2" flower. Ebay purchase with this name, but it looks like floating cloud to me.

oxmyx i love the combination of your last photo with the pink morning glories and the spanish flag/firecracker vine! Your heavenly blues are soo beautiful. Seeing all these pictures of heavenly blue makes me what to see that in my own balcony.

Here are a few of my favorites this year. The first two are supposed to be Sazanami, but don't look like the photos I've seen of that flower:

I'm still having problems with the flowers ripping when they open. In fact, most of them are torn to some extent. I've been told that probably results from our cool, dewy nights this time of year. But the vines seem to sit around and do nothing during our hottest weather and only take off towards the end of summer, so I'm not sure what I can do about that.

Glad to find some interest in MG's here. My wife planted seeds from a package we bought at Wal-Mart this year. She planted them later than we'd planned, but they are growing like crazy from a container on one side of an arbor. Don't know the variety of this one, but here's a couple of pics anyway.

The first one looks like my Saznami did, a bit lighter than the original..The second one is a sport of something else I think, and your last one looks a bit like a chocolate or rose silk..Ron will know if he checks in.
