Wisteria macrostachya 'Blue Moon' -- what was I thinking?
Comments (11)We took down our old metal awning support this year. We had grown wisteria on the awning support (patio sized 10 x 12') for 15 years. Apparently patio sized awnings were hip in the 1970s when our rancher was built. The awning supports were very sturdy: my 200 lb. teenage boys can swing on them without bending. The wisteria trunks were 8-12 inches in diameter after 15 years. During the summer months, if it rained, the wisteria had to be trimmed every two weeks. Each trimming filled two trash cans (you can't compost it). It grew up under the roof shingles in a week if we didn't keep it cut far back from the house. I pruned according to the literature and got flowers for three different years out of the 15 years. Still don't know why it flowered or why not. This year we replaced the old awning supports and wisteria with a wooden pergola and we don't miss it! I do have three sprouts that survived on my swap list if anyone wants a vigorous twining climber! They are about five feet tall at this point....See MoreIs wisteria Blue Moon fragrant?
Comments (4)In my yard I have a Amethyst Falls wisteria vine which is being trained into a tree. I just purchased a Blue Moon variety which will be trained onto a wooden fence that get's full sun. I have wild wisteria growing near a State Park near me which I thought I could transplant and use in my yard. After noticing that it practically has taken over a city block, I thought better of it and decided to stay with my American varieties. I'm pleased to hear that the Blue Moon variety is fragrant as I intend to move it to a portico over the backyard patio once it is built. I have two questions for all the "Blue Moon" owners out there: 1. How much growth do you see per season with this variety? 2. Have you actually seen re-blooming with this variety and if so, are their any tricks to force the wisteria to re-bloom that I should know about? Thanks, smithmal...See MoreWhy didn't my blue moon wisteria blooms open

Comments (13)Based upon the enthusiasm, this plant got on my want list, as a sane alternative to the oriental wisterias. In a big pot until it is tall enough to get to the light coming through a deck fence around a deck 4-5feet off the ground. A Holly tree shades right up to the deck and there would be too much shade to just plant the Wisteria and expect it to reach up to the fence. Will not mind if it runs up into Holly. Surely fits many a recommendation for vines, in having roots in the shade and top in the Sun....See Morehoyasahoy
