Moonflower cuttings/Spring planting ideas

Hello everyone, I'm new to posting here but not to reading the hoya ( I post there too) and vine forums on GW. So for my first questions here on the vine forum:

Has anybody sucessfuly rooted moonflower cuttings? I took two from the vine I'm growing outside, potted them up and placed in an eastern exposure. They looked awful until today when I noticed one leaf perking up one the one cutting!

Next year, I'm planning of adding another vine to the morning glory/moonflower mix outside. I want to plant Cup and Saucer Vine (both kinds) along with them. Good idea or not? Let me know what you think!

Hi Brad, are you planing to grow them inside for the winter?

I love cup and saucer but never get any flowers...do you? I am never successful with the moon flower either. Too much vine and very few flowers...I see you are z6 also.

Hi Ronnie,

No I'm not planning on growing Cup and Saucer inside for the winter. The moonflower cuttings I am though. I wanted to see if I could grow it as a houseplant. I have an old book called "Bringing The Outdoors In" and it says about moonflowers, cup and saucer, passiflora, even clematis growing indoors.

I have never grown cup and saucer vine before. I hear it's easy to grow though, which makes me want to try it.

I have a honeysuckle that's doing rather well. No flowers this year as it is its first and just vining skyward! I bought it as "Old Fashioned Honeysuckle" at a local garden center a few months ago. I can't tell what kind it is due to the leaves but I'm thinking it's a japonica (Yes I know, bad move). But, like everybody else, I love the fragrance!

P.S. Moonflowers have a wonderful fragrance as well! I've been growing them the past three years and have had flowers every year. Morning glories grow with it and mom's been growing them since before we moved. They always do well. Oh I forgot, I also have two clematises: A Reiman and a Nelly Moser.

Azure - the advice above is fine, but I'll be the contrary opinion. I've planted lots of roses in the fall. And summer. If you get those little bands, just sink the entire thing into the ground. In other words, leave the plant in the container. They're about the size of a quart carton of milk, maybe a little smaller. I've used those milk containers as bands for starting plants too - but they don't hold up much more than a year. Anyhow, if you get something in Sept, find a home and sink the entire thing into the ground. The roots on the bands are very minimal and you don't want to disturb them. But they should survive the winter - if you were rooting them yourself, they'd survive. Moreover, don't forget, whoever is sending them to you didn't root them just the week before - they've probably been rooted since spring as if you'd done it yourself. If they don't survive, that implies that you can't root roses outdoors in your area, and that's just not true. Just don't disturb the plant. In fact, you can leave it in the band for the next year too. The roots may grow thru the band but it's no big deal. I do it all the time and then transplant the following fall. Right now I have something I've transplanted into a larger pot but it's surely grown thru that after 3 years - I'll give it away this fall or next spring and it will be fine. You don't have to coddle roses as much as you think. I suppose I'd put the plants in a protected area rather than out in the open where they'll be exposed to drying winds, and you may want to cover - I use the 2 liter soda containers - just cut off the top and pull off the label and you have a nice little rooting greenhouse. When I've done late rooting I just leave those on until late spring. Never lost a plant yet. Your winters are worse than ours here in NYC - a few miles makes a lot of difference. So if you have a particularly bad one, you may lose a plant or two but in many years, I haven't. So while there are no guarantees in life, and you're not going to get blooms your first year anyway, I see little reason to wait. Best of luck.

I love to see these trades going on. I know that we are technically supposed to post on the plant trade forum but that one has too much to wade through when you are only looking for succs or cacti. For the record. I am sharing largely because I need to get my collection to a more manageable size. In the warmer months everything is outside and can take over the balcony and that is just fine. But I learned this winter that I had too many to keep happy and healthy through the cold months when they need to come inside and go under lights. I have 3 people who I am sending plants to this weekend. I am very glad that they will be going to homes where they will be cared for. :-) Especially after my sister-in-law turned a jade that was nearly 2 foot tall into a pile of mush! I am pretty sure she left it outside when it got too cold and it froze.

I haven't been on this forum for years but I'd love to come. Years ago we had acreage and I had gardens everywhere but after downsizing 5 yrs ago, we have a postage stamp....mostly shade. I wish we hadn't downsized quite so much on the land but then again it's my guys fault because his workshop is taking up valuable sun garden space! :) I've had 6 foot/leg surgeries the last 4 yrs so gardening hasn't been on my radar much and I'm still at the point of buying/changing out/filling in the garden so I'm afraid I don't have any plants to contribute unfortunately. Given my propensity for overbuying though, as we all do, THAT should change in the next several years! Love to meet up with all of you! Jan

OOH Brad keep us posted on the MF during the winter!! There are a few members, myself included that grow MGs inside during the winter. I just made space in my little sunny room for quite a few glories. Some are going upstairs under fluorescents too...Hoping by December it feels like July!!

I love honeysuckle...what a great memory smell for me. I just had to remove one from our arbor, just old and craggy looking! I'll surely have a new one somewhere else though!!

What MGs do you grow?

I can't remember what they're called.They're pink and dark purple flowers. They're doing great though!

As for honeysuckle, Brushwood Nursery has some back in stock. But the only fragrant ones that he has are Goldflame and Early Dutch. They may not be as fragrant as the Japanese variety, but it's better than nothing.
This past spring, I gave my friend/neighbor a honeysuckle plant for her birthday. It was labeled Hall's Honeysuckle. They said it's really taking off! What kind of honeysuckle did you rip out?

Sorry to say that the cuttings have died :( .
I just threw them out today. However, the ones growing outside are doing extremely well! I see a couple buds that might bloom here in the next week or so!

We live in condo,Saratoga Springs,N.Y..I decided to grow moon flowers in a pot on the veranda they were planted ,but the vine is growing on wrought iron with tons of buds we can’t wait to see them at night and early morn when they are on there way out. The container isn’t that big ,the root system must be incredible. I have to water, water ,water.

When you put the moon flower in the potting soil did you just put it in the soil as is or did you use rooting hormone powder?
