Does the flower look like this (see link below). If it does and has three lobed leaves, it is a Scarlet O'Hara. My digital camera sorta messes with the color some what and the actual flower is red vs the photo color. To see one closer to the actual red color, change image34.jpg to read image19.jpg. That photo is real close to the actual color and is on the same plant.

Susan and Brice, I must say that I'm very dissappointed in my Scarlet O'Hara, so much so that I ripped the whole vine out.I maean, the flower was pink, and small to boot. Compared to the other MG"s in my garden it was ugly. Not really ugly, but in comparison. I've seen pic's of it on ebay, and they were a deep wine color, really different than the color that emerged. Susan, I am still looking for a real RED MG. :) arum

Do you think that seed offered is not the true type? I have tried MG 'Heavenly Blue' with various results? I have never tried 'Scarlet O'Hara', considering the flowers may very well be almost magenta (dark purple pink). I know catalogs do not always show true color and will not even order from a company that offers doctored photos, so there may be some laxness with the seed purity.

This is my Scarlet O'Hara vine. It is definitly in the red scale. My digital camera does color really well. Just look at my finger in the last pix. The color of my skin is right on.

You have to remember that sometimes flower color can be altered by what's in the water, soil or food as well as how much or how little sun it gets.

That is the same color mine are! Mine are solid red without the white throat. I get a few like yours too. I agree the sun, soil and water make the color change somewhat. I have noticed mine vary in color slightly each day. Todays color is a orangeish red. What type of camera are you using? Maybe we should all buy the big box of crayons and use them as color standards. LOL

Bill, mine pretty much stay the same color. I'm crossing these with Blue Picotee and plain old blue's to see what happens.

I use an Olympus D-490 2.1mp. It's a great camera. It's a great camera, easy to use and has great features, like extreme closeup, light control and multi-pix. I use it daily and have a card reader on my computer, so download of pix is a snap.

It still looks a very deep pink to me, rather than red. I was expecting a red, red, red, without any hint of pink to it. Just like all the pictures I have seen of it.

I'm going to have to take a look in the morning and see if mine have the white throat. I don't think it does, however.

It's still a beautiful vine, just not what I expected.

Well, I go for the really big flowers, and usually BOLD colors, like MT Fuji.If a MG dosn't have a big flower, I don't care for it too much. Like the "Shiva" I have, and "Strawberry Swirl" They are pretty, but not showy.

In answer to your question Susan about the Ariod forum, yes I do go there, just not much the past few months, cos my Amorphs. are all growing, not much to report on, except that my Konjac put out 5 leaves instead of one, and my Amorphophallus Paeionfonous,(sp), is doing really well, which surprises me greatly. I'm sure I will never see it again after this fall, they are said to be difficult to grow, and I believe it. I have Sauromatums and konjacs coming up everywhere. I may put a post on a certain site and just hav people come pick them up,(FREE), no charge. Thats redundant isn't it? :) arum

I had my first Scarlet O'Hara blooms today
Mine are a dark purplish pink (I wouldn't call it red)
The one in the photo above is pretty, but mine do not look that color

I want something that gets lots of flowers all the time.
And stays open all day!

I was searching this forum to try to figure out when the heck my Scarlett O'Haras would bloom finally, and then I went out this morning and there one was. It's a little winier than pink.

I have an old strain of Scarlett O'Hara that has been kept true to type from the early 60's...the flowers are about 3" across,a solid throat down to the very bottom of the tube...I performed a full vertical cut on the bloom which showed that the only white visible was from the pistil and filament hairs..the leaves were trilobed to cicada shaped any very slightly(!)variegated...

I had it growing in a small flower pot late last season and actually held the flower up to the computer monitor to compare it to the color of most of the other SOH's and other flowers posted all over the web...

I didn't take any photos as I was hoping for some bigger blooms and better lighting conditions,but I personally thought the flower color was the nicest I have seen so far...

The color most closely matched the color of the Ipomoea quamoclit I have linked to in the PlantFiles with similar microshading that dissappeared if the flower was viewed from more than 12"...some people may consider this to be a red...but everyone has different red perception...
