The Good, Bad and Ugly, Part II

Been a mixed weather week. Some storms with wind and rain but nothing bad for us. A couple days in the 90s but mostly not.

The Good. Not every plant has set fruit yet but most have and all have blooms or bloom buds. I haven't counted but I'd guess near 200 toms on 40 plants though 2/3 of those are probably on 2 Red Robins, 2 Sprite, 2 Yellow Pear and a couple other Cherry types

The Garden today.

The biggest toms so far are on Jet Star.

Red Robin is loaded and I expect our first ripe to be one of these. This plant is only 8.5" tall!!!

The Bad.

See that 8' tall trellis and the Yellow Pear with it?

This is what a deer did last night. The larger stems were over 3/8" thick and I was planning to start training it to the trellis today.

The Ugly.

What ever is bugging Taxi is still there. I've worked with moisture, feed and aphids. It seems to be growing out of it a little but all new growth has this problem and what little improvement that is noticable on existing comes very slowly. No other plants nor the other Taxi show this deformity.

I can't recall - is sick Taxi in the tree plot with the others or a container off by itself? If it's in the tree plot, which one in the top pic is it? If it's in a container have you tried moving the container to a different location?

It looks fungusy (sp?) or is all that white dusting just foggy mist?

I flew back and forth from Cape Cod, all summer long, to see my mother. We had such a dry period in the early part of the summer that I thought everything in my yard and neighbor's yards would be toast. And some things did not make it. It's the part of gardening that I find enjoyable and crazy making. Slipcovers - the good, bad & ugly

Probably 4-5 years too late but maybe we can weigh in a little here as well. When it comes couch covers or sofa covers, the traditional sense would be that it's loose and unfitting and yes - companies that sell sofas or slipcovers like us would put in a lot of effort in making the end result look super crisp like so: You're right - it's unrealistic to be super focused on one's decor and presenting it to the world but when we do it for a living it's kinda something we have to do. It's constantly having to show our best work every single time, but it's definitely important to note that not all slipcovers can be made equally. In our experience, we could classify aesthetic sofa rejuvenation into 3 major categories: 1) ready-made slipcovers / universal covers / drapes These are the typical "Stretch covers" you see everywhere going for about US$100 to $300 and claims to fit every single shape of sofa, which they don't. (I've personally tested this on a Chesterfield sofa and looked like a trampoline. Feel free to pm for a photo.) They are economic but aren't the best looking - hence, good for a quick fix. 2) tailored made sofa covers (can be further sub-categorised into "relaxed" or "snug" fits) These are the slipcovers we're most familiar with since CB sells them or we can go to an upholsterer to have it made for about $800 onwards -- which I have to say sounds cheap because upon inquiring many upholstery shops that's just the charge for labour as far as I remember. $30/yard extra for fabrics, which brings the total to $1200 but once again this are upholstery shops. Nowadays online slipcover makers like us and others are able to provide these at about $500 or so for a complete so slipcover set inclusive of seat/back cushion covers. This can go a couple of ways, with the "relaxed" fit looking a bit more shabby with a skirt and some people do intentionally go for this look. Alternatively if you want something more fitting and closer to upholstery, it is very possible for sofas that constructed more squarely as per the image above. While it's also possible for more curvy sofas, the outcome won't be as perfect. Having said all that, the more fitting the slipcover the less likely it'll look saggy in a couple of years. 3) upholstery Not much needs to be said as this is literally putting fabric over the couch so the fit should theoretically be perfect. The downside is just cleaning and as you all mentioned, potentially quite gross (even steam-cleaning isn't a 100% solution). Of course, it is just as expensive as getting a slipcover made from that same upholstery shop. Hope this gives a bit more perspective to everyone else despite the tardiness! Just like everyone else though we're also quite interested in what you went with in the end!

I love it too but haven't had it in a while because nobody else in this household likes it.LOL When I did have it on a regular basis I always used calves liver.I cook it the way my mother did.Salt and pepper the liver and dredge in flour.Cut up an onion and throw it in a heavy skillet with a little oil and let it cook until it is tender and slightly brown.Remove it to a bowl and set aside,then brown the liver in the same oil.Move the browned liver to the side of the pan,scrape up the stuff from the bottom of the pan,add some flour and water to make gravy,slide the liver and onions back into the gravy,cover and let cook about 20 minutes.MMMMM I can almost taste it now. A friend had never cooked liver before and invited me over one day for liver and onions.I was kind of scared because she wasn't a very good cook in the first place so I didn't know what I would be getting!LOL If it wasn't good I didn't want to hurt her feelings by refusing to eat it and there's not much of anything worse than bad liver and onions!LOL When she put the dish on the table I though,"Well,it doesn't look too bad".It was absolutely delicious! She cooked the onions first in oil then browned the liver like I always do.She put it all in the bottom of a casserole dish and poured cream of mushroom soup over it,baked it in the oven and it was soooo good.Needless to say I was pleasantly surprised!

Taxi is in the tree plot, 1st row, far left. Yeah, closest to the tree. Nope, Carolina Gold and Grampa's Minnestota are next row, far left 2 and closer to the trunk by a half a foot each.

No fungi. It rained last night and was foggy this morn. Those pics were taken about 6 a.m. What you see is reflection from the flash on water drops on the leaves and the hairs holding water.

For reference, those strings are near enoungh to a ft from the ground and a ft apart. That makes Gardener's Delight (last row, 2nd from left) the tallest at ~3.5', Taxi ~1.75' and Jet Star (last row, far right) ~3'. 3'x4' spacing except for 2 plants staggered in the middle of the rows, closing in the far right ends.

Found him. Honestly, I don't think it looks all that bad, least not by a photo, so I would just leave him alone and see what happens. He's got nothing contagious anyway so leaving him won't hurt anything else.

You know the old saying that sometimes the cure can be worse than the disease? So try ignoring it for awhile - maybe that will work. ;)

On the other hand, it gets to the point where the time spent
working and worrying so much on one plant outweighs any possible benefits. That's when it's time to rip it out and move on. Got any replacements?

No replacements but so far 2 each of 20 are fine except this one.

My darlin likes yellows and its supposed to be a good early but she can live without it.

I'll bow to your much greater experience especially since I've never seen it before but to me, it sure resembles CMV.

If its not contagious then its a learning experience and I thrive on them :-)

CMV is always possible of course but slim IMO and photos just don't do it justice when it comes to diagnosis unless it is well advanced.

So, if you want here is a way to experiment and find out for sure. Rather than pull it up, it's still small enough to dig it up and put it in a container and move it well away from all the others so it is no threat to them. It will either develop very definitive CMV symptoms (see photo linked below) at which time you can destroy it or it will survive and produce. That way you'll know for sure the next time (heaven forbid) you see early similar symptoms.

Eyes on and hands on is the best way to learn. What ya think? ;)

Thanks so much for the info.

After reading, as you suspected, it seems unlikely that CMV is the culprit since the first several aphid treatments were simply blasting off with water and no other plants exhibit the ailment.

While it certainly doesn't look as bad as the worst pic, it does very much resemble the others but the condition does seem to be improving if very slowly. Hmmm.

I'll take more detailed pics to measure advancement or retreat of the condition, consider potting up and or rooting a cutting from another plant.

Do you know, should it be a virus, could it be contained to the symptomatic parts?

You'd think it would be mentioned as a treatment if pruning would be helpful but it is odd that only the top of the plant is affected ...

I've never seen anything like it before. Thanks for the help!
