This is What Happens When You Do NOT Have Enough Pots Part 2

Today I had to replant my Tiny Tim Tomatoes and Sweet Peppers. Of course I still have not recovered from my transplanted Beef Steak Tomatoes that I re-potted last week. I sat down and started making small transplant pots from the jobs section of the Dallas Newspaper. I finally found something I could use that section for! I then used the seedling pot to plant my Sweet Banna Peppers and jalapeno Peppers I picked up from Roach Feed and Seed a couple of weeks ago.

Yes it is. I guess you can just tear little holes in the side of the paper and plant the whole thing. So not having pots might be a plus after all.

I agree with dirtmonkey. Buttermilk is great for outside growth only but the rest is not needed. If one were growing moss outside; mix chopped moss with clay from the ground along with a little ground-up peat. Add water just enough to make it useable. Place this mixture over a rock or area and cover with cheese cloth. Tie in place with bonsai wire or cotton string. Lightly mist daily and insure it stays moist. Place in a semi shaded area and moss should sprout. There are many ways to grow moss. Air flow is important. Moss needs the air. The bark chip idea is also a great one. I use composted finely chopped pine bark. I then ground it after it is composted. Leaf mold is also great.

I would say yes for the main rooms the hall is off, like a living room or kitchen. I would not worry so much for a kids room or bath because they will change often. We chose a light tan that complimented the main rooms of house but still nuetral enough in case I got a wild hair and decided to repaint the kitchen or such.

nerdyshopper, my experience with bananas is limited to the outdoors environment. When the older leaves look unsightly, I just remove them cleanly. However, if the new leaves show signs of disorder, I must look for a cause - at the roots - because Mother Nature gives priority to the growing parts of the plant. Whatever the roots take up is delivered, live and direct, to the growing point(s). Watering a potted plant " ...so it is never dry", has never been of great benefit to the plant. Watering, in itself, is necessary; but sometimes the greater benefit is aeration! As the water moves down the container, it draws fresh air behind it. This change of air has a tonic effect on the root system. I get a childish delight when I see all those bubbles rising when I submerge a potted plant in water. I know also that that all the stale air is expelled from the root zone. That is why the physical condition of the soil should easily permit water movement downward; and more essentially, a potted plant should be allowed to dry out almost to the temporary wilting point before it is watered thoroughly. Nan, this was mixed in with a bunch of small pots of mostly Sedum, Pachy-somethings, Crassula that I bought thinking I was going to make an organized planting. Of course, I never got around to it. The straight part coming out of the pot was lying on the ground. If you look close at the left side you can see a trail of roots coming out of its' side. Where it bent it became upright. Illusion solved. I laughed when I pulled this out of the still Winter weeds and saw the little pot.

Yes I have seen several others using this method. I like the Idea but I am afraid that the paper will decompose and break apart before I am ready to plant. I am having to check on them everyday.

How timely. A couple of days ago we had an inservice by staff from the Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center and their demo included a gadget to make pots from newspaper. Yes, it was pricey.

Bah! You do not need one of those. I use a large soup can to roll my paper pots. Beside those pricey pot rollers are to small. You can only grow a seedling in there for short while and the roots system will be tiny as well.

Element, I have received plants at a plant swap that were in cans (such as the soup can you mentioned). They had simply punched holes in the bottom (looked as if they had used an ice pick) and potted into the can. Just a thought if you think the newspaper is not going to hold out. It seems to me that the smaller roll of newspaper into a larger can would work well, also.

It might work. I have 2 different types of rolled newspaper I am testing right now. So far both are holding, but the side are very wet. But not really any wetter than a peat pot. I think I might save some soup cans for extra potting. Only problem is, I am running out of storage room. My sheds are already full.
