Well, what I've been able to find on it says 90 days, when's your first frost date? Here mine's in mid November some time, so I think I might have some time to get them in....
Where did you end up buying yours from? Only retailer I see is hirts garden's on amazon right now...

We shouldn't have frost until mid-November here as well. It usually manages to stay fairly warm all the way through October, which would be more than enough time.

And yeah, I got them off Amazon from Hirts. I've heard good and bad things about them, but they're the only game in town, so I rolled the dice.

Hmm, well I've done more research on the tomato known as OSU-Blue and P20, everything I've found on it seems to indicate the developers weren't ready for it to be distributed yet, they were still working on trying to breed a better taste, but several strains were shared by people who should not have, and now there are multiple different strains of blue tomatoes that are all being called OSU-Blue that have very unstable characteristics. Apparently the one called P20 is the stable line, but the more I read the more it seems that people are using them interchangeably when they shouldn't.
To make a long winded post shorter: I think I'm going to wait on committing any of my limited tomato space to blue tomatoes until there are a few stabilized lines to choose from that maybe have some predictable characteristics and for now watch and cheer for the people who are experimenting with them.

A blue tomato sounds awesome. Post some pictures when you can. I'd love to see how it gets along.

I read about them leaking out, but all the "OMG, they made blue tomatoes and nobody is supposed to have them bet, but this one guy..." messages were from 2008. Its been three years, I would think that would be enough time for them to stabilize things a bit (considering they're probably doing hothouses and would be doing a generation every 90 days or so).

And hey, if it still turns out to be a super secret "you're not supposed to have this!" tomato, all the better. They're heirloom from what I've been able to determine, so I'll be sure to harvest lots of seeds. =)

That a good point, but there are probably still going to be multiple different lines that all perform differently that and are all being called the same thing. So while your saved seed will be consistant year to year, your 'OSU-Blue' might be quite a bit different than my 'Osu-Blue'

P20 is an advanced line selected for certain improved horticultural characteristics that was shared conditionally by the breeder with others. There is published information about it in the scientific journals.

What ended up being called OSU Blue was a line from that program given out by someone who worked there (apparently unauthorized). From what I've seen, this line is different than P20. There were many crosses done in that program with different parents (as noted in the published work) so it is likely another line.

Neither of these are "heirlooms". You may be confusing the issue that they share a similar gene with a line 'Purple Smudge' that some might call an heirloom. The gene responsible for the blue coloration on fruit, such as 'Purple Smudge', has came from another species. This original work was done around 1950. It is suspected 'Purple Smudge' likely was a line derived from that earlier program.

These lines (P20 and OSU) also did not seem to be completely stable at the time they were released. It's been long enough now that some lines derived from these releases could be stable and could now be considered open pollinated but certainly not heirlooms.

They are interesting.

However expect improvements in flavor over these in the future.

What was given out (and 'Purple Smudge') are really not that eventful.

Also one will start to see "novelty lines" from these. They will look interesting but probably not be much for flavor improvement.

For most of us, or at least myself, I think the best plan is to sit back a year or two and see what flavour improvements the likes of mulio (and Tom Wagner and frogsleapfarm and probably many others) can introduce to these "blue" lines.

I really have high hopes that within two or three years we will have high anthocyanin tomatoes that also taste as good as the best heirlooms.

Forgot to say that it came in the mail on the 18th, alive and well. Transplanted it into it's big boy pot immediately since it was cool and cloudy that day anyway. Its currently sitting under the car port hardening off before being put out in the sunlight.

Very interesting looking plant. The stem is a vibrant purple, and some of the larger leaves have purple blotches in them as well.

Its too late to try anything fun with them this year, but I'm thinking I should try crossbreeding it with the Mr. Stripey thats just now putting out fruit. Would be interesting to see if I can get a striped purple tomato.

Or perhaps get a black sea man, black krum, or one of the other "black" varieties that have dark flesh and try mixing those.

I've grown OSU the last few years and I don't think the flavor is THAT bad. It's definitely a novelty and will never be a staple, but visitors to my garden like it. It's pretty funky looking.

I bought 2 plants and several different 'varieties' of the OSU seed this Spring. So far all I can say is WOW. The Plants are big with thick fat stems and very fast growing. They are out growing all my other tomatoes. They flower early and set well. The 2 plants have numerous golf ball sized fruits on them that are turning deep blue/purple right now. Looks like they will be ripe soon.

The seed grown ones are blooming right now from a May sowing and look to be more variable, though they too have excellent vigor. They will be plenty of time for these to set fruit too.

Besides the fast growth the lateral stems are very vigorous and have had to do a lot of staking. the only negative is that they have been prone to wind damage from being so big.

They are in the same soil as my other tomatoes which is good but not overly rich. The vigor on these is exceptional.

Yup, I had the same thing happen to mine as well.

I had it in a fairly mediocre wire cage because I honestly didn't expect this much growth out of them. Couple weeks ago we had a windstorm and it was so big and bushy the wind picked the entire damned thing up and knocked it over (note that it was in a 25 gallon pot, full to the top).

Had some damage from that, then more damage after I had to cut the metal cage out to put better stakes in. Didn't feel like just tossing half the plant on the compost pile (especially since they had small tomatoes on them), so I dug out the rest of my potting soil and tossed them in a big pot. Figured they'd live or die, would see what happened.

Not only did the impromptu cuttings live, they kept the tomatoes that are now ripening. These are hearty little buggers!

Had a small one ripen early (was down in the leaves away from most of the sun, so it was only half black, half red), too small for seeds so I ate it. Don't know why people put these things down, was a very tasty little 'mater in my book (although, again, the strain isn't entirely stable, maybe I just lucked out and got a yummy one).
