It is very aggressive here in South Carolina but pretty. They are suppose to be annuals. Mine game up strong from last year. A real surprise! Because of this I am taking a real hard look at these guys. I will not plant vines in the ground. Always in pots on bricks or raised beds so they can't get away. This is also the first time I have ever seen seeds on mine, they are very far and few, but others report that they seed easily and produce a lot of volunteers. I have also noticed, when lifting their skirts for seeds, with relief, that they do not try to root in the mulch. Might be a different story on the ground.

Being in Nebraska with very long hard freezes, I doubt very seriously they would survive. I'd keep a sharp eye out for seeds though. I tie baggie ties on pods when I notice them so I can keep an eagle eye on them.

I've nevr had it self sow in central Ohio, but mine is in a pretty tiny area; not a whole lot of options fighting with the chives and the basil and the omnipresent rose-of-sharon.

I grew this at the end of a row of green beans for several years. I planted it the first year, and then the next several years it came back from seed. I never had a problem with it, though. It didn't sprout anywhere farther than about a foot from the original vine, and I didn't have just a ton of seedlings: maybe just 3 or 4 each year. Then after a few years, it didn't come up anymore. Maybe that one winter got too cold for it. I'm in 7b or 8, so I wouldn't expect you to have much of a problem in zone 5.

I love this vine, by the way, and would plant it again without hesitation.

This is a very well behaved vine. It does re-seed, but just pull up the volunteers if you do not want them.

It does not take over or root when it touches the ground. I have had it by my mailbox for years and I never do anything to it. It even shares the space with another well behaved vine, the coral honeysuckle...
It has a few blooms right now, but really takes off in August till the first frost.
