Brandy Boy Contest -2015
Comments (186)Lar - I don't fertilize the micro or 2" soil blocks at all. I don't fertilize until I have planted the 2" block into a larger container - then I fertilize weekly from that point on - with a liquid (mixed from a powder) 9-58-8 root and blooming fertilizer with iron. Do you fertilize the soil blocks? If so - what do you use? Nice looking Brandy Boys Socalgal! Yours look great also Antmary! We water from the bottom - the 3/4" soil blocks are set on a capillary mat in a tray - they don't break apart on us when we water them this way. We water the mat around the perimeter being careful to not pour water directly on the blocks. The 2" soil blocks are placed in a rack that is made to sit inside a Perma-Tray - We lift the rack with the 2" soil blocks out - place water in the perma-tray - then put the rack back in. The Blocks do not fall apart but we are careful to only put about a 1/2" water in the perm-tray so the blocks are not over watered. We move the 2" blocks to pots when the plants are ready....See MoreBrandy Boy Contest -2015 (2)
Comments (151)Antmary - 10 flowers - that is impressive - that is what I would expect from my experience with Brandy Boy - you should have a prolific plant! Interesting observation about the leaves! I noticed Yolo's plant leaves are more similar to your plant (nice tomato Yolo!). I went back and looked at our plants when they were even younger than yours - and the leaves are very large. It must be a function of my soil and fertilizer? Which plant will produce bigger/better tomatoes? Perhaps your plant - as much of my plant's energy appears to be going to the leaves? It may not be a function of pruning as the photo shows my plant before I prune suckers? It may be a GH affect? I am sure Carolyn would have an answer !...See MoreBig Boy vs Better Boy
Comments (3)I have not grown them side by side, myself to review them. One season ( long time ago ) I grew one of them. Can't remember which one. The plant was not very fast growing. The fruits were round ( ~ 4 -6 oz) grown in cluster. The taste was fine. But recently I have read quite a few reviews here and there. The general consensus ( ~80% ?) was that Better Boy is superior. Better Boy has been also compared to Big Beef and Brandy Boy but has not come out as the winner . YMMV Sey...See MoreBetter Boy vs. Big Beef - Best Tasting/Performing VFN+ Tomato Contest
Comments (16)Dave Even Rutgers VF which is very reliable and a good producer in most places is a borderline variety here. I assume because it's not nematode resistant. VF varieties like Rutgers and presumably Jet Star don't do well here either as they lack the "N" after their names. Here the more "letters" a variety has after it's name the better. That's why you will hardly ever see Bonnie selling heirloom plants at Home Depot because they would go out of business as none of their customers plants would survive. When people ask me what varieties will grow here I tell them to look at what varieties Bonnie is selling at Home Depot. Bonnie can't afford to sell plants that die and don't produce. It's not me as Better Boy, Sweet 100 and Black Cherry perform well here. BTW: you're right Yellow Pear is a total zero a true "tofu" tasteless tomato lacking any flavor of it's own and most others agree. Dry Powder, Tight Lines & Green Thumbs...See Morenorthernmn
