What's the prettiest thing blooming in your yard right now?

In this yard it is the two trays of mini snapdragons bought on sale at Lowe's for 10 cents per 4 in. pot. A lucky find; they will bloom well into the summer. The soap aloes are offering a lot of color, too.

My Texas Gold Columbine are in full swing and look great. They've increased since last year and are looking so woodlandy and natural.
The perennial candytuft has been going strong for about a month - that little snow we had didn't even phase it. I love this stuff.
The phlox subulata is screaming pretty loud too. Most of the rest of my bloomers are late spring/summer/fall.

NBJ reminds me of Bouganvilla - it thrives on neglect . Those cut back take longer to bloom than those left alone . My original plant was cut to almost nothing and is returning with beautiful growth - no flowers yet . Cuttings that are several years old and received no trimming have buds but no open blooms - yet . You may be just far enough north of us that it might take a week or two longer for your plant to set buds . NBJ seem to like plenty of sun and to be in the ground . Cuttings practically root before your eyes . My best performing NBJ is directly under a strong security light that runs all night long . I think that no matter how much or how little you do for this plant , it will survive and do just fine . I recommend planting it in the ground . Then start cuttings and put those in the ground in different places under different conditions . That experiment will tell you more about your own garden and plants than we ever could .

Hey Brass Tacks. I'm a newbie to the world of roses so am not the best resource. This is only my second year with them. However, they have done very well this year with very little blackspot and I only sprayed two or three times in mid-pring. I just noticed yesterday that my Abe Darby rose has finally starting spotting. Some of the other roses have no blackspot, some have a little, but none have it to a conspicuous degree. They are mostly in blazing sun, we've had almost no rain, and the air movement in my yard is pretty good which all helps. And unfortunately I do not have an in-ground, automatic watering system and yes, I do move sprinklers around a lot. Fortunately, I have a small yard and several outdoor spigots so it isn't as bad as it could be. And to Dancingdachsunds: those hibiscus would probably all do fine for you in ordinary garden conditions and with ordinary irrigation. I'd slap the soil amendments right on top of the soil too, just don't do it too deeply. I constantly top-dress with cow manure and oak leaves and grass clippings and have never had any problem with any of it.

Hi Michelle Sorry for the delay in responding - just got back from holiday in Turkey. As I feared, there had been a few frosts during my absence but damage to my Salvias has been limited to a minimal number of plants and the garden is still looking pretty good. This is in contrast to a garden about 2 miles away (a pub garden where I also plant lots of Salvias) where just about everything has been blackened. It just goes to show what differences there can be in mesoclimates. Even within my own garden which has the advantage of being on a slight slope, there are microclimates where the flow of cold air is restricted and a specific Salvia can be badly frosted whereas equivalent plants, only a few yards away, can completely escape damage. My soil has a large proportion of clay but, over the 25 or so years I have been here, I have mulched with various products such as mushroom compost and composted manure to help build up a top layer of better tilth. I root lots of cuttings and the old soil from all the pots also gets thrown onto the garden. Surprising how this all adds up to improve the soil. Most years, in early summer, I try to give the garden a 2" mulch of some sort to help keep it in good heart. I know many Salvias don't need this but I plant very closely and the mulch helps with moisture retention and weed supression. If I go back 10 years or more, I always got a hard frost about mid-September which knocked off my Salvias (except most microphylla types). Since then, although the thermometer always dips around this time, temperatures are not so low and then we seem to then often survive for at least another month. Last year was even better and the Salvias were not really hit until early December when we became blanketed by snow. Ignoring any general global warming trend, I read that we may now be moving into a short term cooler period (there seems to be a cycle of about 25 years or so between highs and lows) and so I may have to get used to September frosts once again. Of course, by then, I may be just pushing up daisies and not bothering with Salvias. Naturally you are most welcome to visit although from the above you can guess that timing can be crucial if you want to see the display at its best. You must also take in Robin's garden as he always has gems that we others drool over. I'm thinking about your request of naming the plants in my pics. It's a bit of a task but probably worth the effort. Give me some time on this. Finally, I was pleased to see Robin include Salvia 'Imelda' on his site. This was a seedling I found near S. greggii 'Peach' in late 2008 and which flowered for me in 2009. I named it after my wife's middle name. Ragna, they can easily get 12 feet and taller, depending on how much moisture they get. They are prolific seed producers and the seeds survive the winter just fine. I always have some that sprout around the mother plant. They are a perennial in their native habitat, but not here. If we have a warmer winter, they might re-sprout from the roots. If you want to minimize the number of seeds they produce, just cut off the bloom stalks. The seeds remain viable for many years, too. Just a reminder that the seeds are very poisonous as they contain ricin, so be sure to keep them away from children and animals. My moringa tree is probably close to 15 feet tall now and loaded with fragrant white blooms. I've seen hummers feeding from them this week. See a few seed pods forming but not certain they'll mature before the first frost. I do have one tree in a large pot, so I'm planning on protecting that one as I'd like to harvest some seeds.

Purple petunias that wintered over in a pot on the back porch!

Even the geraniums made it through the winter in those pots. I didn't cover or protect them at all. I kept looking at them saying I don't know how you're doing it..but keep it up!

I had no idea petunias had fragrance until late yesterday afternoon! I went out today and bought a bunch more.

The my autumn sage is starting to bloom a little and so are the clematis.

I've had 2 double delight rose blooms come and go in the last 2 weeks too.

la biche and sdlm and sdlm climber are outdoing themselves
and so is old blush
of course in july-aug-sept, they'll be limping along!!
that's why i'm looking for other great flowering plants that bloom in the heat!!

Sorry, but I can only narrow it down so far!

Here we go:
Climbing Old Blush has been showing off for at least a month.
Mrs. BR Cant, Duchess de Brabant, climbing Clotilde Soupert (gorgeous fragrance) and double yellow Lady Banks have joined the bloomfest.
The Cemetery Iris (I. Albicans), Iris brevicaulis, pink verbena, oxalis, Roman hyacinth, and bulbine are very pretty.

Molly - the Texas Gold columbine is perennial, and for the most part evergreen. It is an early bloomer and is really full and lush with ferny foliage that looks great when a breeze is blowing. In summer mine still stays blue-green, although the plant appears to reduce in size (no flower stalks). If it gets ragged looking you can cut it down short and by fall it will start to put on fresh foliage. It reseeds, but not rampantly in my garden. It's easy to remove the seedlings that get in somebody else's space. This is a great no care plant - just keeps on keepin' on!

Oh, the most colorful are my Louisiana phlox - love those plants. Then there are the columbines, Lady Banks roses, salvia, wisteria, flowering quince, petunias and brugs (in the plant room). Oh, and the calibrochoa, Magurite daisy, wallflower and Johnnie jump ups. So much more to follow soon.

Carrie has a large area of this Louisiana phlox and it is breath taking to see. I also love the ajuga it was up all over the beds. I had no idea it flowered so pretty. But I'm a sucker for anything blue :)

My pansies in my pots that I planted last October are just gorgeous - spilling over each pot and so full. I've just started a new garden so it's pretty bare bones right now, but we did plant 4 double pink Knock Out roses a month ago and they always have blooms on them.

Kathy, my heavens -- nine inches across ... What is that? A double amaryllis? I've never seen anything like it.

It's amazing how spring pops out so quickly. Last week it seemed the yard didn't have much color This picture was taken this morning.

Hard to decide what looks the best.
There is an impatient, double red, that was in the trash pile at Lowes, it is HUGE and covered with tons of blooms, last fall was a pitiful little thing I almost threw out cause no idea what it was.
The brugs are covered with blooms.

Mexican love vine! It is fabulous right now.
But then the giant bird of paradise is in full bloom and looks wonderful.
Salvias, giant yellow salvia, rhipsalis, hibiscus-they all look great too.
Wait! Wait! the kalanchoes, all in bloom and such cool blooms!
NO! The amaryllis all over the yard...
I can't decide, it all looks great right now!

Bougs will sometime bloom before they leaf out.

Molly-the Hinkleys gold grows really easy from seeds. I've only gotten it to return one year. Never came back again. Once in awhile Home Depot or Lowes will have them. It's a native.

Jac-most of my amaryllis in the garden are just sending up blooms. Be patient.

The hardy amaryllis has the most striking blooms so far, and the blue princess verbena has the most profuse blooms (it is covered!)

However, the thing I'm most excited about is the new gingko tree that we planted this winter. It is putting on it's first leaves and they are so cool!

Coral honeysuckle. I love the bright orange and yellow flowers against the beautiful green foliage. Truthfully though, I should have planted more spring bloomers because my elementary school age children told me this week that our garden was too "green" right now. I painted a child's chair purple and stuck it out there in the middle of the garden for some instant color LOL. It made them happy.

It's a hodge podge of ranunculus, laura bush petunias, wine cups, dianthus. Knock Out roses are in the back and weren't blooming when I took this picture last week.

Right now I'm into the color GREEN! Green means IT LIVED!!! I'm loving the green sprouts from the trees to the potted plants.

And, My BIG Su-prize! While cking my 'shade plant' holding bed I saw a huge hydrenda (sp) bloom! Further inspection showed it to be my little 5" snowball bush! The bloom is as big as the plant! Not only did the baby live, but it bloomed grown up size blooms! I'm so proud!

Blooming now in my yard-
2 bunches of purple oxlias (also the ones in pots I just bought from HD)
2 wh salvia blooms
2 tulips
2 bunches of mini daffs
1 old fashion wh petunia bloom
And 3 acres of weed/wildflowers-breath taking!

My pansies still look great, and now the columbines are blooming, yellow, blue, and purple. Creeping phlox still looks pretty good too.

my birds of paradise are blooming like crazy right now. i just had them planted a year ago, so i'm really excited to see them finally bloom. my hibiscus are continuing to bloom (they bloomed all winter)and my lantana have quadrupled in size the past few weeks.

The prettiest things right now are just about done are some daffodils that I got at 75% off at Lowes last fall. They are double/ruffled and are just georgous. My Texas Gold Columbine is starting to bloom and looks fabulous as does my bluebonnet (just one huge plant!). The violas still look great, but will need to be replaced in a couple weeks with heat loving annuals.

Marti, they do look kind of like red spider lilies from a distance, but they are Soap aloes. They're one of my favorite plants for reliable color throughout the growing season, which is pretty long here in San Antonio.

They are easy to grow and hummingbirds and bees love them. Incidentally, last year at this time I was seeing no bees! This year they are plentiful.

WOW!!!! I noticed this morning my Camila has blooms!!!! For the last 2 years (as long as I've had this bush) the buds got frozen each time! Poor thing really needs a little bit more sun than it gets in that corner, but she/he is putting on a pretty good show in spite of that.

For me, right now, the best looking blooming plants are my Intermediate Bearded iris. They look like something Van Gogh would paint.
