growing hawaiian papaya in southern california
Comments (23)Hi! I would really appreciate any tips on growing papaya plants from seed. I'm in zone 10b in a pocket of So Cal where it never gets below 40 even on the coldest winter night and days are generally warm most of the year. In both 5 gal pots and in prepared spots in the ground, I had both Hawaiian and Mexican seeds sprout like crazy. But after a month or two, they would start to wither and die and never get over an inch or two. I don’t think I overwatered or underwatered and just to be sure, I watered some plants more than others but they all basically shriveled up after a couple months. They get plenty of sun but not 100 plus degree sun. I’m basically trying to grow them in the same conditions that my father had huge and healthy plants when I was growing up but I can't replicate his success. I planted them in cactus soil for good drainage and mixed in some potting soil after a couple of attempts in order to mix it up but no luck. Super frustrating! Any tips? Thanks! Comments (10)I agree with Lisa, Papayas are 'easy'. I am growing papaya for 19 years, always from bought fruits (if I liked the flavor). The simplest method for me is to throw the seeds in a designated corner of the compost pile and let them sprout freely. After a while the strongest survive, and those do not mind being transplanted (learned that method from a Mexican friend) But I finally have found the best papaya I ever had. I got a seedling from Tony, the fruit is super sweet, fragrant with a beautiful orange color, and - it has no seeds! Today I was 'lucky', the fruit had 1 (one!) seed kernel in it. So brute, my suggestion is to toss them into an undisturbed area of where you want them to grow (with some compost) and just wait and let them fight it out. Good luck :-) Evelyn...See MoreHAVE: papaya/pawpaw
Comments (6)I have some papaya seeds, and want information on how to save them, as well as dry them. I have planted them, and had them come up. However, I do not know exactly how to grow them. What kind of soil do they like. I know they like lots of hot, sunshine. A Thai lady had one that bloomed, in a pot, and she said that she did not do anything special, but put it in sun. She grew several papayas here in my zone, even though they have to grow (with foiliage for eleven months to fruit.) She said she did not use a greenhouse or anything. Thank you for your time....See MoreBananas, Papaya,EE's...What other fast growing, cool looking....
Comments (7)GAtrops, Doesn't passion flower aggressively invade everywhere once it's growing in a location? My dad planted 1 cutting and soon we found it comming up yards away from where we started it. It became overwelming, and tried to climb over everything in the backyard. I don't know what cultivar (I think that's right), he had, but it sure made a mess....beautiful flowers though. Are they all that aggressive? I'd love to have some. Anything else guys?...See Morecopingwithclay
