Persian shield

I saw a plant this weekend I'd never spotted before or heard of and fell in love with it: a persian shield.

From what I can gather, they don't like cold much at all, but go semi-dormant over winter in warm climes. I'm at the northern edge of their hardiness zone, so they may be perennails or annuals for me. I'd find out this next winter.

However, I can't figure out how much sun or shade to give them in Houston. I've got a wide variety of sun throughout our yard, and I think these would look GREAT surrounded by some caladiums, but I don't know if they would work well in the same planting area. In my case, namely under a large bald cypress that provides shade pretty much all day, or potted under/near our north-facing shaded front porch.

Anyone grown them around here? What kind of sun/environment would they thrive in?
