do I have to buy the worms?

My bin is all set to go, but I am debating what to do about the worms. I read that if I wet a piece of cardboard and leave it on the ground the red wigglers will come up to the top and i can collect them in the morning. But other places are saying that I will not find the right worms in the soil. I saw a worm that looked very much like the red wigglers (more red than the gray earthworms I usually find) yesterday, so I am thinking about giving the cardboard thing a try. $25 for a bunch of worms seems a little excessive for me. If you this doesn't work, do most fish and tackle shops carry this type of worm? I have many of them near me, and I don't mind starting with less than a pound. I don't have much waste at the moment, and I heard the reproduce quickly.
