Wisteria Question

I just passed a home with a gorgeous wisteria growing in a tree form. It was totally thick with blooms and looked like it had been trimmed to that shape, and the blooms just covered the plant. Mine is a loose form of a large shrub - can I achieve the same look by strongly pruning it after it finishes blooming? I have fertilized it with some superphosphate last fall, upon reading somewhere that doing this increased blooms, and it is certainly blooming well, but I would like that more formal shape, and a solid mass of blooms. I cut mine back only once a year, no more for fear of cutting off future blooms. Once I trim it back after blooming, can I continue to trim it to keep it shaped without sacrificing blooms? Would appreciate any suggestions on how to achieve this - thanks!
