Yardvaark, I don't know how to post pictures. I'm really wanting suggestions of shrubs that will compliment and look good with the magnolias. Evergreen, 2-3 feet tall, can handle Tx heat, morning sun only. Hopefully someone may have some good ideas. This is for my front flowerbed and nothing else is in the bed at the moment except the 2 teddy bear magnolias. I have one at each corner of the bed.

In the '17 year Magnolia study' they state: The Glen St. Mary’ has a large brown-backed leaf that hangs in a downward position, revealing distinct, attractive veins on the leaf surface. The photos of the tree I posted does seem to have the leaves hanging in the downward position. Although I'm not sure if it is a pyramid shaped tree. And about the 'Majestic Beauty' they mention: ‘Majestic Beauty’. Its leaves are the largest of any in the study, but they also are the lightest green of all but the Aldridge strain with pale green undersides. Also, the growth habit overall is irregular, lacking any particular characteristic form. The seedling selections and ‘Majestic Beauty’ had the largest leaves overall with the smallest leaves on ‘Little Gem’. Cultivars ‘Bracken’s Brown Beauty’, Hasse, and ‘Little Gem’ had the darkest brown backs, considered highly desirable in the industry. ‘Majestic Beauty’, the seedlings, Aldridge, and ‘Smith Fogle’ leaf undersides were smooth and hairless (glabrous), which generally is regarded by the industry as an undesirable trait. In the pictures the tree also seems to have lighter color on the underside of the leaves than some of the other types and I'm not sure if the leaf undersides are smooth and hairless as stated above (I don't live close enough to the tree anymore to find out). No discoloration on any of mine in Winter. There is an island planting of Eastern Hemlocks on the south side that might help mitigate the Winter sun some, but single digits are kinda rare for me (average January low is around 25, and average minimum low would be in the low teens..., but being 7a, it can get down to around 5 F. in some winters). My Little Gems sailed though last Winter with the sun, I still see more issue with Teddy Bear compared to the LG's. The strong verticality of Teddy Bears seems to accumulate heavy weigh snow until the breaking point. But I see no difference with respect to cold hardiness. My cultivars include..., Victorias, Edith Bogues, Teddy Bears, Little Gems, and Majesty Beauty. I do go out after a heavy snow to try to get the snow off of the Teddy Bears, but sometimes I am too late..., other varieties are usually okay, but I have suffered occasional snow load damage to a branch on Victoria, Majestic, and even Edith Bogue, but they do recuperate their canopy soon enough. BTW, it is the warmer, wetter, heavier, SOUTHERN snow that is the problem..., not the more fine grade arctic snow which is as heavy as cotton candy (fortunately, freezing rains are very rare for me!).
