Planting a new Grape Vine

Hi,

I just planted two new Somerset Grape vines. I got them from the local Walmart. They both had a couple nice green leaves on the pruned main vine trunk. Right after I planted them, my dog decided to bite off the few green shoots off one of the vines. Is this likely a lost cause and should I go out and buy a new one to replace it or will it likely send out some new buds after it gets acclimated to it's new location? I don't want to wait too awful long only to find out it is dead.

I just need to know what to expect.

It is possible the roots could still grow and new shoots could appear, but you will have to do something to keep your dog from killing the vines either way.

Thank you Terry. It still is just a stick in the ground at this point. i hope it comes back. We are expecting some nice sunny weather this week and if it doesn't show something soon, I may have to replace it. Yah, the damn dog thinks everything is a toy.

Bonnie: Did a little surfing and came up with some recommendations from Dr Essie Fallahi at Parma ID. The best seedless from their trials are Alborz, Emerald, Autumn Royal, Ralli/Anahita, Jupiter, Princess, and Neptune. I'm growing both Princess and Autumn Royal. They are very good grapes but wonder about hardiness. My favorite is Summer Royal but would question it's hardiness as well. Do think Jupiter is one you should try. I haven't grown it but plan to just to see what it is like since I've heard so many good things about it. And it is probably hardy enough for you. The Fruitnut

I would wait till late evening and water real well , then water it good every day , hand water and keep it off the leaves

Sunset Gardening Book has a really good explanation of Grape pruning.... though if you are growing them for eating, you probably don't need to prune it for wine grape production. I wouldn't worry about it till next WINTER, when it has no leaves. The first year, it needs to grow and make leaves and a good root system. One of my grapes, which is a couple feet from my vegetable garden didn't get watered ONCE this year... :) guess it's roots grew over to the veggie garden and didn't need me to water it.

I've been growing grapes in the Puget Sound region for a number of years. Pure Vitis Vinifera type grapes are prone to many root and foliage diseases. The "Champaigne" grape is very sensitive to powdery mildew. I have about 80 varieties of table and wine grapes up near Tacoma and could suggest several, depending on you growing season length and heat accumulation. Most grapes need at least 1,700 degree days accumulated above 50 degrees F., during the season to ripen their fruit. Most of the well-known Vinifera types need over 2,000 gdd/50 to ripen. Contact me for some more details. You can grow some awsome grapes in the Northwest, but you won't find them at the 'big box' stores. I have one called Richard Walden that is very resistant to botrytis and mildew that does pretty well locally, and is seedless. It has Flame Seedless as a pollen parent and is also seedless.
