my mother and sister=plant killers

My mother and sister both live in Tyler. Me too, soon. Anyways, they kill ANY plant they can get their hands on :) Even indoor plants like the easy philodendron. Does anyone have suggestions for container plants, indoor or out that will be very easy? I think the main problem is that they forget to water but I plan to set them up with the plants and remind them when to water or do it myself when I visit. So they would need something that doesn't need pruning or anything like that...?

i feel your pain, every cutting i've ever give a friend,
she kills

maby its not in the cards for them to own plants

i know lots of folks who just dont have the time/
patience, whatever, to tend to green things

not tryin' to be ugly here, but if you've got to
tend to all the care, why don't you just keep the
plants yourself (wink)

i've got an english ivy that takes quite a bit of
abuse, the only water he gets is rain, and i haven't
transplanted him in years, he seems happy

hey, i just had a thought, if they have a nice sunny window, maby a few post of usable herbs would get them
more interested, maby they'd tend to them a bit more
if they knew they could cook with them

last year, for my moms birthday, i bought her three lovley
cacti, i don't know how, but she killed them too

actually, i dont think she watered them enough, i told her
they do need water, but not a huge amount, but i think
she thought, since they were cacti, they didn't need water

also, she smokes inside her home, and that might have
killed them too

Thanks, herbs are actually a great idea. My sis loves to cook and my mom's husband usually does the cooking for them so they might pay more attention. Thanks!
I'm also thinking about succulents because we used to live in Az so they might understand how much water and how much sun they need...ivy might be a good idea too though I don't want to part with mine!
I guess I want them to have plants too because for me it just makes such a big difference in my home, I love it. It's not for everyone though, I know..

If you search through the old posts, and maybe do a general read-through of the whole forum as you have time, you will see several postings about vinegar, either the household stuff at a strength of 3% or 5% or the horticultural at 20-30%. Be aware that the latter is a STRONG acid, and should be treated with great caution. Vinegar kills only the leaves, not the roots, of plants, especially young plants. If the plant is an older one, or a returning perennial, then the roots won't be killed with one application, and will need repeated applications. Soaking the roots will only - temporarily - make the soil acid. This MIGHT kill off some weeds, but might not kill off others, and won't be good for the surrounding plants you don't want to kill. If you want to spray against slugs and snails on hostas, a weakish solution of cold caffeinated coffee will stop them eating the leaves, but may not kill them. If you want to kill slugs, your best bet is Slug-go or any other iron-phosphate based granule or pellet. It's harmless to pets and birds, and breaks down to a mild fertilizer.

For those of you that love this plant-WARNING! My mother’s house had an entire interior corner on her brick house filled with it. Due to a malfunctioning downspout, they were getting lots of water, and the roots advanced under the brick foundation and the slab. By the time I discovered the problem, the brick veneer on the house is settling ( the house is 60 years old, and we had never had this problem). A full repair would have cost about $9,000. We took part of the brick wall down to alleviate the weight, improved the drainage, and I dug up the entire root system, and got as much out from the slab as possible. We couldn’t afford a full repair. I now have the same problem on an outside corner where there is Nandina growing right up against the foundation (cracking brick, loose brick). I don’t even have a drainage problem there. Those red berries are pretty, but likely not worth the tens of thousands it may cost you in repairs. I am getting rid of every bit, to my mother’s dismay. Never grow this stuff near a foundation!

I'm not planning on getting rid of the vine. I love vines and they're a huge part of my plant collection. I have well over 100 different varieties and about 25 or so are passifloras. I also have a variety of aristolochias and plenty of other host and nectar plants. I'm just going to have to keep a close eye out for any trapped moths or butterflies. I'm glad to hear that it will release them though the poor little moth I saw was stuck pretty well and I doubt he/she would have made it out without my intervention. It is in a container so I'm going to move it to a part of the yard that has fewer flowering plants. I wonder if the foliage is toxic to monarchs? I haven't seen anything about that in what I've read. Hopefully they'll stick to the other milkweeds. I'm sure I lose more to the praying mantises then I would to the Araujia sericifera. Does anyone know if Oxypetalum caeruleum is toxic to monarch caterpillars? That's another vine in the milkweed family that I'm growing this year. At least the carnivorous plants in my bog garden trap bugs that I don't particularly care for. Thanks for the info and links. Karyn

Vinegar as a weed killer

I've tried that Nature's Avenger Organic Herbicide and it works! It is a new patented citrus-oil based weed killer. I sprayed it on my driveway and around my fences and my dog runs. The next day all of the weeds were dead. And it smelled like oranges. Bizarre. check out their site naturesavenger.com. They are approved by the EPA, USDA National organic Program and OMRI. They seem legit and it worked. Side note: Called them about the soil thing. Here's what they had to say. Citrus oil dissipates really quickly and it doesn't affect the soil. You can replant within 4 hours of spraying. and since it dissipates so quickly my kids and dogs can't bring it into the house. Check it out. I think it's a better alternative to Vinegar.

I can kill herbs in a day or less.
I've got friends like that too. I've given her everything I could think of. She killed a mother-in-law tongue! I didn't even think that was possible.
Plastic. Though now that I think about it she did kill some plastic ones too.
