White spots on my tomato leaves...

This is my first time growing tomatoes. I bought a tomato plant at the farmers market. I re-potted the plant and it is growing well. I started to see white spots that looks like freckles. The are within the leaves of the plant but not all of the leaves. I am not sure of the cause of the spots. The plant is growing fine. I am afraid that it may be harmful to the plant because I don't know much about growing them. I potted with Miracle Gro. So I'm not sure where I went wrong. I am sure that it isn't bird poo! These spots are within the leaves. Please, help!

depends. little white spots are the beginning symptom of a number of things. if your tomatoes are hybrids that are resistant to a number of diseases, then you can count those out.

look on the leaves and the bottom of the leaves especially. put a white paper towel around the base of the plant and give it a light shake. see if you see any tiny mites fall off, i'm having a hell of a time with red spider mites on the tomatoes on my apartment roof. they suck out the sap from the plant and stick around on the underside of leaves. yuck.

Hi tworivers - would it be possible to post a picture of them? It would help a lot. Are these true leaves or just the cotyledons - the seed leaves - that are damaged? It is possible to scorch very young seedling leaves if they are too close to the light - happens to most of us now and then - but the plants will usually recover. And it's especially true if you mist the plants or if it is too hot in your growing area. Is it enclosed so that the heat is trapped? Got a thermometer near the plants? A small fan to lightly move the air will help. Only other thing I can suggest without see it is to lightly touch it and see if it will rub or brush off on your finger - that would tell us that it is some sort of mold or fungus. Classic white spots of sun scorch. It often results with plants that weren't hardened off completely or can be caused when rain or water drops sit on the leaves, bright sun comes out and they act like a magnifying glass. It "burns" (kills) the cell tissue of the leaf underneath. Usually affects the older leaves that were grown inside - they don't tolerate the sun exposure as well as the new growth does. It doesn't hurt the plant in the long run. The worst damaged leaves may die and fall off but new growth will be fine. Dave

Here are some pictures of the plant I was concerned about: I've also noticed the leaves on most all of my toms are getting a leathery texture and curling a bit. This is my first time growing tomatoes so I have no idea if this is normal. These are pictures of my sweet millions and cherokee purple, they seem to be growing like weeds but I'm a bit obsessed. Thanks for any input! Those were the sweet millions, then again on my CHerokee Purple I see the leaves getting leathery and kind of curling.

not unless you are applying a liquid fert ... if lowest leaves.. i would look to higher leaves.. and if they are OK ... walk away .. historical damage ... if just one leaf.. same .. did you start the seeds indoors.. and recently take them into sun ... without hardening them off ??? do you wet the leaves .. in the sun?? where are you .. better pix of the whole plant might help ... frankly.. with new seedlings.. its rarely a fert issue ... unless you used old worn out media ... imo ken
