Hello,

I am looking for a certain form of Dicentra-at least I think it is a Dicentra. Unlike the normal dicentra which has compound fern-like leaves this one has simple oval shaped leaves. It is a vine. The flowes are very wide Dutchman's Breeches and have red that comes out of the bottom tip of the white flower. I bought it on-line. I think I have lost mine to the Southern California freeze and the extreme dryness. I would like to buy some more of these but do not know the kind of dicentra it is or where I might find them. Please help me locate these.

I think the (common name) Bleeding Heart vine you are looking for is a clerondendrum, not dicentra. Maybe that will help your search....

I think you're thinking of Dicentra scandens, or Dicentra macrocarpa (sp?) Both of these have the type of flower you describe. E-mail me and I'll send you some links to the places I've been searching for these. I recently ordered seeds for D. scandens from one place, but I've found another place that carries both...

A lot of these come from Asian sellers and they are all fairy tale plants :-) If these wildly colored varieties really did exist, do you not think you could find seeds for them locally? Or started plants at your local nursery? Blue strawberries - and all the other fantasy colored vegetables and flowers - simply do not exist and that is pretty darn easy to confirm if one takes the time to do some basic research........ There are also some recent threads that have discussed these seed scams. Jack Seeds is one of the biggest culprits and the web is full of complaints from duped customers. And even Etsy has been known to have unscrupulous purveyors on their site as well. Caveat emptor - buyer beware!!

I wonder if it’s the rain? I live in Greensboro. My oldest one (3rd year) is very big. The two I bought last year are pretty short (around a foot) compared to how tall they were last year. I just assumed it was b/c they are young and were transplanted last year. Now, I wonder if the rain contributed.

Gold Heart Dicentra--single specimen or grouping?

I grow 'White Gold' rather than 'Gold Heart' but I find it is a large enough plant that it works well as a stand-alone specimen. There is not enough room in my garden for a grouping of 3!! btw, here it is going on the second week of August and the foliage on White Gold looks as good as did when it first emerged in spring. That's not very ephemeral in my book :-)

I kept it watered during the winter and in recent times. Nevertheless, I dug around with my finger today and found the corpse. A visit to a nearby nursery resulted in my taking home a new Dicentra which hopefully will thrive. I'm not even putting it out on the balcony tonight, as we are getting near-freezing temps tonight. I put all my tender potted annuals in a big Rubbermaid tub with a lid, or in my Suncast double walled garden shed on the balcony. The hostas I couldn't move got covered with bubble wrap clipped to the edges of their pots.

The flowers for both dicentra scandens and dicentra macracapnos are yellow....

Yes---but the flowers os D. macrocarpa have q distinct orange tinge on the bottom edge---or so all the literature says. If you have personal experience whish says otherwise, please tell all!!!

twrosz, I'm not familiar with macrocarpa, don't find that referenced in any of my material....

Macrocapnos here: (although I don't find climbing dicentra especially easy from seed, either dried and purchased or fresh from my own. When I bought d. scandens from Lazy S's Farm, I told them how frustrating I found the seed and they laughed, said their experience the same. They offer cutting grown plants :))

I agree with Morz8, it sounds like Clerodendrum thomsoniae.
Dicentra scandens has ferny leaves. Clerodendrum aka Bleeding heart vine has large oval-ish leaves and the flowers are white with red.
