I live in Phoenix and hopseed bushes do marvelously well here. I just had to transplant one thats about 10feet tall. He looks very droopy so I cut him back.. will have to see if it sends out shoots from the bottom. The arizona rosewood is also known as the sissoo... I bought my daughter one and it even had to be moved after a year and a half in the ground. It is now about 3 and is doing marvelously well.. just beautiful. I'd love to have a sissoo but don't have anyplace to plant it..

Wow -- the original post was in 2010. Bressler, I guess you were the guinea pig for Texas. How did the plants work for you? At least we know they do well in Phoenix. Thank you BJ.

I didn't know what a Purple hopseed bush or an Arizona rosewood was until I looked them up just now.

I have had Purple Hopseed Bushes for about a year now. They are planted as a screen at our house in coastal SoCal. I had the same problem as some folks on here so I'm posting in case my story helps someone else. We had a happy little bush that had been growing for about 8 months, suddenly drop all its leaves and start to shrivel up. Despite all my efforts to figure out what was wrong, it kept declining and eventually we pulled it out. About a month later, the bushes growing to either side of that plant also started to lose their leaves. This time, I reacted much earlier and combed through each branch to look for the cause. I immediately found small, hard bumps saturated at the base of the bush and in clumps along the branches to about halfway up the bush. I had a bottle of Bayer Advanced 3-in-1 from a battle to save an Olive a few years back. The arborist we brought out to advise on the Olive told me about the Bayer concentrate, said I could get it at Home Depot and that it was a wide spectrum insecticide/fungicide. I went to work during non-bee hours (it is harmful to bees) and kept the spray directly on the branches and base. Scale matures in cycles so you have to spray at least 3 times, 1 to 2 weeks apart. After 3 sprays, they were all dead. I trimmed the base of the bushes so I could easily see if the scale was attempting a comeback and pruned the body to let more air and sun in (they don't like warmth or light). All are looking happy, healthy, bushy and are back to growing taller. Hope this helps!

Hop seed all the way! I utilize this plant in almost all of my designs/installs. It is perfect to green up those hard concrete walls and perfect for privacy. It is always that beautiful spring green color and once established grows fast with little water. When a client wants to talk about oleander I always start out with letting them know that it is poisonous and invasive. If later you ever want to remove it, you will need to dig out the entire root balls. This spring you will be able to get nice sized 5 gallon hop seed and give the plants this first summer to get established. The above photo is of hop seed I planted in my yard 3 years ago-I took this pic last summer after a trim. It has easily reached higher than my walls for at least a year now. Good luck!

Aztreelvr mentioned it above, but I want to reiterate that the Coral Fountain (Russelia equisetiformis) would work perfectly for you from what I can tell of your desires. It is perennial, and is very hardy. It doesn't take much water, and it is only a bush size. Mine is only 3 years old, and it blooms year round, throwing up pretty red flowers all over the bush (although more in the spring & summer)- the hummers love it! The only down side is that it spreads rather easily...branches can take root when they touch the ground. But, it's not that big of a chore to pull any seedlings that have started every couple of months (I give them to friends, and they have them in their gardens now!). That's my suggestion! Good luck! Sadly, I can't say for sure since I moved away from that house. They were planted in the backyard and not visible from any streets, so without trespassing, I'll never know how they fared.

I was just at Barton Springs Nursery today. I should've checked if they still had them. If they do, that probably mean they got good feedback. If not, well, then...

I have five AZ Rosewoods and they need very little water, you don't need to prune, and I leave mine alone and left them do their thing. They make a great privacy screen!
