You're having a hard time getting a definitive answer because there isn't one. The need for a larger container is progressive and depends on your skills at and dedication to pruning roots and the above-ground portion of the plant. A #3-size plant, left to its own devices, would quickly outgrow a 5 gallon container, after only a year or two, but a #3-size plant properly cared for and properly pruned might be productive in a 5 gallon container for many years. The soil you use also plays into the equation. You can't just plop a #3 plant in 10 gallons of heavy soil and expect it to grow robustly. You could, however, plop a #3 plant in 10 gallons of a well-aerated soil and it will thrive, if you meet its other cultural requirements. You would also need to describe the present size of the plant material. If they are liners, a half gallon container might be appropriate for this growing season, but if they are in 5 gallon nursery pots, you might be able to leave them in that container if they were recently bumped up in size or if they have tight roots you'll need to bump them up yourself. Cape Gooseberry (Physalis peruviana) and Ground Cherry (Physalis pruinosa) are cousins. Two selected varieties of Ground Cherry are Pineapple and Aunt Molly's (from Poland). I believe that Thompson and Morgan also sells a variety of one of the species above called "Golden Berry". Just to confuse things, there is also a tomatillo called "Pineapple" (Tomato Growers Supply). The Pineapple ground cherry is much smaller than the tomatillo. Ground cherries self-sow in many climates. Both cape gooseberries and ground cherries may be mildly toxic before they are ripe. Good questions: For me, Taxi is much larger than a golf ball, it is baseball size or larger. Some are smaller, but I sell just about every single one, regardless of size. They produce early and are a good match for the other early red ones. I have found that older customers like the smaller yellow ones and they will buy them even if there are larger ones available. I also plant BHN 871, a larger orange/yellow one. Where I live, I am bothered by wind and tornadoes. I have had one tunnel get pulled up in the middle on one side, due to wind. Luckily I was outside and saw it happen and was able to grab and hang on to it and push it back in the ground and called for backup. If I had tomatoes tied to the frame, they would have either been damaged or pulled out of the ground. Maybe that isn't a good reason, but I would prefer to loose the structure and maybe keep a slightly damaged crop than lose the entire structure and crop. I plant 5 plantings of determinate tomatoes inside and outside in a year. My customers are wanting large slicing tomatoes all year long and the indeterminates were always disappointing me. They give me a good early crop, but the size keep getting smaller as the year goes along. Also we grow for winter markets, so we need to clear out the building in August to prep for the winter season. Determinates fit that production schedule. This is my 3rd year of going mainly only with determinates and I have been very happy. We are actually increasing production by several hundred plants again this year. Jay

SUCCESS!!!!! After my second try, and a very hot summer, I am now seeing the fruits of this wonderful labour. And, what a wonderful fruit. I've got about 8 or 10 berries, so far, but there are many, many, many more to come. If we can hold out 2 more weeks, I should get at least a pie and a bit of jam. They are soooooo good. One of my sons tried one yesterday and thought it a bit on the sour side, but I'm finding them really nice. They are forecasting a bit of cooler weather for this weekend, with the possibility of snow. That's really early for us. It will be such a shame if we get an early killing frost. It is supposed to get really warm again after this cool spell. The weather has been so hot this year with many, many days above 30C. Summer 2005 only had a couple of those really hot days. Definitely, this year, I will be covering the gooseberries with my frost blanket. I was away for 2 1/2 weeks in late August and my tomatoes have bushed out of control. Not sure how many I'll get but I have to find them first. All in all, it's been a good summer with lots of learning going on this year. Hope all in kiwi country is going well.
