You mention coffee grounds and I've been wondering about that myself. Outside of making a "rocky road" for slugs to navigate, are coffee grounds beneficial to plants like roses? Why?

Yes, roses for sure like coffee grounds. I think it may be the acidity but not sure. My husband has been feeding his brugs leftover coffee and they have not had any pests at all and are twice as big as mine that aren't getting it and I have had insect problems as well. As for slugs I just saw on a gardening show to pile up those sweet gum balls all around hostas and other plants that slugs like and it will keep them off of them. They said you can crush them and apply as top dressing for potted plants.

Lava rock also will serve this purpose and is also what I use(d) to keep one of my cats or dogs from digging in pots. It hurts their paws and they get leary of doing it in others pots so it can be a short term training method with little effort and no real harm to the pet. Another slug stopper is a wide metal band of copper will shock them if wide enough for the slug or snail size you wish to keep out.

Used coffee grounds aren't that acidic;
most of the acid is in the brew!

but they are good, mild sources of nitrogen, they help the texture/tilth of the soil, & they attract your best garden friends, the earthworms.

Sprinkle them everywhere you can in the garden, being careful not to put down a thick layer;
thick layers tend to crust over & repel water.
