Container Mango Tree - size of pot/soil type
Comments (19)There is potential for zinc toxicity if you plant in galvanized pots ....... especially if soil/water pH are on the acidic side. There is plenty of potential for you to have complete control over your plants ht and width, but controlling its mass requires a little more finesse. IOW, your trunk is going to get thicker and thicker over time. You'll need to learn how to maintain your plants root system, because vitality, growth rate, and branch extension are all negatively affected by root congestion. At the approximate point where root congestion progresses to the stage where the entire root/soil mass can be lifted from the pot intact, limitations related to said congestion start affecting the plant and become progressively more limiting until there isn't much left of the plant. Usually, the plant succumbs to insect infestation or diseases as congestion worsens. BTW - potting up (as opposed to repotting, which includes root pruning) is not a cure for root congestion. It temporarily/partially leaves some of the associated limitations, but ensures those limitations will ALWAYS be in play until such time that you or someone familiar with root work actually gets their hands in the root mass and corrects the congestion. Comments (7)Bailey's Marvel and Irwin can get absolutely huge. Bailey's Marvel is the better tasting mango imo. Not sure on Southern Blush as the only tree I have seen was a small one at the Fruit and Spice Park in Homestead. could be a low growth tree though. They taste good. Glenn trees can be kept fairly small even though its not technically a dwarf, and Cogshall can definitely be grown in a pot. I've never tasted Cogshall but I do like Glenn. Glenn can taste watery though if the soil is very wet....See MoreWhich condo/smallish mango tree variety to pick?

Comments (8)Peat pots for Mangoes? NEVER!..not here. Cut off the lip on those pots to below soil level..and plant in BLACK NURSERY POTS. What they need here is- heat. Black pots absorb heat. Put those plants against the hottest wall you have...and water the heck out of them all summer. When they start to flush? Fertilize THEN. Its when they absorb it best I found. I have a near 9' Mango, thats flowering and I did all I told you (mine was never in a peat pot) until I planted it..in the hottest spot I have. Mangoes in the bay area need to babied the first two years in ground..NO frost. Cover, heat, whatever needs to be done, but no frost....See Moremango_kush
