Feeding the herd

Hi All!

I got into vermicomposting last year by accident trying to save a dozen green beetle larva for trout fishing in a small plastic roasted chicken container. I lost the beetle grubs and gained 48 red wigglers.

Since then I have graduated to 2 larger plastic seafood fish containers with lids.

I have two questions. First is it better to just lay the scraps on top without mixing in? and second does a small bin become stunted with the reproduction process, do the larger worms die off as a result?

Thanks in advance

Jim
