Should I bother my worms???

Hello,

I got my nightcrawlers in the garage in a bin and I haven't seen them in a few days. Should I disturb the peatmoss to find them or should I let them be?

I stir my red ones occasionally to take a head count. Others here may say not to do it. I don't know about nightcrawlers, though. If you stir, dip in from the side with a shovel and lift up, thereby reducing injuries.

I notice the worms in my garden soil are usually gray in color - although not always. The purchased worms are red worms - the kind usually used by fishermen. These are great for use in worm bins and will multiply easily, if the bins are kept healthy. I like the idea of having a nice well-working worm bin handy near my kitchen, to catch all of the table scraps. The most recent one was situated under a macadamia tree and that tree produced a large amount of nuts for several years. Then, unfortunately, I neglected the bin and the tree has not produced as well since. I figured the lechate which exuded from the bottom tray - had fertilized that tree - producing a bountiful crop - honest! Anyway, I intend to start another red worm bin - the original was a 2-story affair made out of tote bins - one on top of the other. Holes were made in the bottoms of both bins for drainage, and to allow the worms to find one or the other bin more favorable to them. Too much garbage will kill them. Too little - will starve them. I started the bedding with shredded newspaper, added lots of coffee grounds, ground up larger pieces of left over veggies - a sort of slurry, to get them started. Once they had multiplied enough - I reversed the bins - putting new shreddings in the top bin, adding a scoop of stuff from the bottom one with worms - then adding stuff as in the first bin. This process worked well for 2 years. Once the bins became full - usually bottom - use the compost in the garden. This will attract worms in and around your vegetables - so long as they are interested in the food available. As the above posts remark - if the soil is dry, they will go deeper in the ground, but return and you will note more during the rainy season. Just my 2 c's. Bejay

Rhizo- it wasn't a coincidence.. I was even aware of the problem before applying it... That's why they tell you to use a sterile growing medium.. I don't believe that to much, because innature there is nothing sterile.. I suspect it was my tea being "unbalenced" with organisms, in nature everything is in harmony, in a 5 gallon bucket, an air pump,and fertilizer you bought a store, not so much.. It wasn't my normal ingredients for tea, I usually hike to the woods and a bucket of topsoil and throw that in, this time i used inoculated out of a bag, which in not balanced in nature... I didn't water it alot at all...the next day, the plants were keeled over with what looked like "mold" around the stem... The soil was even dry! I made sure not to overwater... Thanks, Joe

Ashleigh - I wish we were neighbors! The community garden where I grow stuff is in Lakewood. Fun to share space with others and see what they're growing. Easy to trade with them, too. I've used lots of different materials to help with wind block like old sheer curtains from a garage sale, tulle or nylon netting from Hobby Lobby. These past years I've used sunscreen fabric from Lowe's. I use concrete reinforcing wire tomato cages and clothespins to keep the fabric on the cage. I guess you could use butcher paper instead of fabric, or even multiple layers of newspaper pinned to the cages. You might want to make slits in the paper to let some wind go through. If possible, especially if you have lots of wind, have the material go all the way around the cage/plant. That way your plants can thrive and grow without too much trouble. If it is finished any bucket or bag will do. It is soil now it does need air but not all that much. A loose lid will be fine. Curt :-) I gotta disagree with the above Curt comment. No vermi-compost is ever...nor should it be..."finished" if finished means all the biology of the "dirt" is gone. The purpose of VC is to improve the condition of dirt NOT in a vermicomposting system that really is poorer soil than it will be after the VC is introduced to it. If active VC is integrated with soils and plant containers, the VC is just being relocated. If we were wormin' just to play with worms and/or make landscape filler, I would be doing something more constructive.....like trying to keep up all the ways vermicomposting sometimes morphs into "earth-moving" endeavors....or garbage disposal alternatives. As for storage limits, etc, the best place for it is in flowerbeds, and on lawns, and raised garden beds so it can continue working its magic. I only store it for short periods and when it's so cold outside I don't wanna go out to mess with it. (Like now) Chuckiebtoo

Great! Actually "stir" wasn't a good choice of words. I just lift up here and there for a look, usually when I add scraps. They are always clumped around a pile of kitchen scraps with a few stragglers here and there.

tey, can I make a suggestion? instead of peat moss, a better alternative is coir peat. Peat moss becomes water repellant when it dries out, coir peat doesn't and in a hot climate, the coir will retain the moisture much better and for longer and will be much easier to re-wet. it's also very neutral in ph. I think you'll find the bin will be much less prone to drying out in summer if you use the coir instead.

I dont know how readily available it is in texas but even just one or two coir bricks reconstituted with water is usually enough for an average sized bin. It doesnt break down so you dont have to keep replacing it and the worms just love it, especially in hot weather to keep them cool.

tey, sorry I shouldnt have called it coir peat - it's usually called "coco peat" or "coir". It's not peat at all it's actually the fibre from coconuts which is shredded up and they usually compress it into small bricks for sale. all you do is put the brick of coir into a bucket of water and let it swell up into loose coir and then use that as the worm bedding. :)

Where do you get coir? I'd like to use it but never find it in the stores.

Hi Tey, Im in West Oz :)

socks, the coir bricks are pretty readily available over here in the - I guess what you call "big box stores"? If you can't find it in your regular stores, try somewhere that sells hydroponic supplies because it's also used as a soil-less growing medium :)
