Are worms right for me? and can it be done CHEAP?

Hi all,

I'm doing the garden budget - and I'm realizing that although my soil amendment needs are through the roof this year, I have less time, money and energy than I've ever had, so I've got to get creative! I think it's time to make my own composting - and I'm wondering if vermicomposting is the way to go. I'm also wondering if it can be done really, reaaaaally cheap.

Can you tell me a little of the basics about vermicomposting vs. regular composting? Can I really keep the little guys in the basement and do they really make castings in just a couple of weeks? What kind of setup (and what kind of cash and time commitment) would I need to provide ample compost material for maintaining 500-750 sf of garden planted with vegetables, annuals, perennials and roses? And, for those of us on the ultra-low-budget plan, is there a supercheap DIY way to set up a vermicomposting bin?

With your kind answers, I may even get over my fear of worms. :) Thanks in advance.
