Tomatoes planted where last year's tomatoes grew?

I know what all the literature says, but I've never had any disease problems by using the same spot to grow tomatoes. I don't think I've ever used the same spot for more than two years in a row, though.

Now I'm reading that one shouldn't plant potatoes the next year where tomatoes have grown, either. Soon I'm going to run out of space where one or the other isn't verboten.

What has your experience been with these vegetables?
