Stupid question re: Volunteers from last year's Sungold tomatoes

I planted Sungold from seed last year which did REALLY well & this year ended up with easily 500 volunteers. I transplanted as many as I had the patience for, maybe 300 plants, & gave them away to friends & coworkers until they started avoiding me. I still have maybe 20 young plants lurking in my flowers & corn that I didn't pull up (yet), but they're not fruiting yet.

I guess I need a genetics lesson when it comes to plant hybrids!

Are all tomatoes self pollinating? I had also planted a paste tomato & a beefsteak last year - neither of those 2 took off like the Sungold, but they did produce some fruit. I have no idea if they were hybrids or if that would matter. What if any fruit will a hybrid produce or can you even predict that?

Did I fake out all my friends by giving them mutant tomato plants?

Be gentle - it's just my 2nd year gardening! :)
