Harden off before putting into cold frame?

I live in the Chicago area. I started my tomato seeds too early this year (our first time growing from seed) and they're getting too big to keep under the lights. Our garden area has a 3 foot tall fence around it and is relatively small, so I was thinking of covering it with heavy-duty clear-ish plastic (a friend has some leftover from an ice rink) and trying to put my plants in the ground this weekend, pulling the plastic over the fencing and securing with tent stakes. I guess it's sort of a makeshift hoop house type of thing. Only without the hoops.

My questions are: 1.) Is this a horrible idea? 2.) Would I need to harden the plants off in their pots for a week first before planting them under this makeshift greenhouse? Lows for the next 10 days seem to be in the high 40s, with highs in the 60s.

Thanks. And yes, I know I've made some bad beginner mistakes this year, but the kids and I are still having fun with it. We'll get what we get and learn for next year.
