Do I need to harden off seedlings before planting in hoop houses?

I have a number of tomato, pepper and melon seedlings that are getting too large for my light setup, as I planted too early. I am thinking that I could put them in the ground and cover with a simple PVC hoop house. Or I suppose I could keep them in their current pots (they're big enough) and put them outside with a cover over the flat they're in.

I've never done this before, though, and am not sure whether I need to harden off the seedlings before putting them under the row cover.

Can someone help, or give me an alternative idea? I'll know better next year. (This is the first year I grew from seed.)
