Plant sources inVirginia/West Virginia

I really don't know if this is the proper forum to post to, so please excuse me if it isn't.

A friend of mine is relocating from the Oregon Coast to Bluefield, West Virginia in about three years and is wanting to know plant sources in the area other than Lowes and would love to hear from someone who gardens in that area. None of her neighbors are into gardening, so if anyone can help me out, I'll give her the information. Thanks! Kellie

I can't personally recommend any West Va nurseries, and am not sure how far from Bluefield some of the ones in Va I've been to are. The 1st one I could think of in West Va is Sunshine farm in Renick, but they don't seem to get rave reviews.

Weird Dude's Plant Zoo is in Staunton, Va. They sell nice plants, but it would be a bit of a drive.

My suggestion is, if you haven't already, go to Garden Watchdog and use the search feature. You can select states and check out the ratings for different nurseries.

West Va is a gorgeous state with breathtaking vistas. I've passed through plenty of small towns that had yards full of plants, they must have local greenhouses somewhere.

The Weird Dude's Plant Zoo is possibly the best place on the east coast to find plants...any plant, and of the best quality.
Sunshine Farms in Renick is a close second.
I suspect, though, that there are several prety good nurseries near Blufield. Virginia Polytechnic Institute isn't so very far away. Someone there in the Hort. Dept. should have some very good suggestions.

i was going to say that it is important to have good drainage under the plants and to remember that they like hot and dry(good drainage) so that a stone mulch around the plants is a good idea. that said i just plunked 3 plants int to flower be next to my front steps (mostly clay) and don't do anything for them and they have survived for 6 or 7 years here in northeast ohio. diggerb

I have bought some brown Scotch Bonnets / Habaneros at a Haitian/West Indian market. The hot peppers, not the plants. They may be from the DR or Jamaica but not 100 % sure. They have red and yellow ones in a box. But that is in Brooklyn NY and the brown ones are unusually available. Well could send one for seeds. I am looking for some Manzano/ C pubescens seeds

There are several more close to us (I live in Rockbridge County too): My favorite and the most reasonable is the Mennonite nursery (Milmont) in Stuarts Draft. Right now they have a sale on trees, shrubs and perennials and fall annuals. They have a beautiful selection of fall mums too. Just follow Route 11 north to Greenville and take a right across from the Pilot station onto Route 340 to Stuarts Draft. Stuarts Draft is a small town and is about five to eight miles from Route 11. Milmont will be on your right approximately 3/4 mile after you have passed through the intersection of Route 608 and 340. You can also make a day of it and visit Waynesboro. Just continue on Route 340 (after taking a right from Milmont) and you will shortly be in Waynesboro. Follow 340 all the way to Route 250 and take a left at that intersection. About 1/2 mile on the left you will find Waynesboro Garden Center where you will find large trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, a nice garden shop with two levels. Farther west on Route 250 is Fishersville with a place called I think is called the The Village Garden Center(just look for a big red barn on your right) with more trees, shrubs, perennials and annuals. Ask for directions there to Viette's (it's not far from Route 250). From Viette's you could then go north to Shreckhise (sp?) Nurseries in Verona for trees, shrubs, p's and a's which is not too far off of Route 11 and from there to Harrisonburg (also on Route 11) there is a nice placed called Hess Greenhouse which sells mums, pumpkins, perennials, annuals, grasses, etc.(look for the huge windmill). And by the way, in Harrisonburg on October 6th at the arboretum at James Madison University there will be a bulb sale (Brent and Becky's Bulbs)! The web site for the arboretum can be found at the web site for JMU. That ought to keep you busy for a while. I know of more but they are farther away over Afton Mountain. By the way, you are in Zone 6 so don't get too many tropicals before you figure out where your microclimates are.

Live oaks in Northern Virginia

Well, it it’s been a while since I posted here. Here’s the effect of heavy snow on three of my established live oaks in northern Virginia back in Jan. 2022. Had to take them all out. It’s not the cold, BUT THE SNOW LOADS that limit their success here. I still have my oldest live oak (30’ high). For some reason it was not damaged. Maybe because it was less out in the open. And branches could rest on other trees.

Not sure how close Bluefield is to Winchester, VA, but there's a couple of great plant sales at the State Arboretum (Blandy Experimental Station) every spring and fall that she might want to check out. The spring sale is always held on Mother's Day Weekend and ArborFest is held usually the first weekend in October.

Virginia continues to be a leading importer of electricity, compared to other states. Building a "clean coal" plant such as the one in Wise County, is one way to serve more customers and do so with minimal environmental risk.

We have a small, family-owned greenhouse business in Bland County, which is real close to Bluefield. I can't say our name on here but if you want I'll post an email address where we can be reached and will supply the details then.

We have 4 greenhouses, one cold frame, and one basket house and have most everything except trees and shrubs. We do not carry soil, pots, mulch, tools and that kind of thing---only plants----baskets, herbs, bedding plants, perennials, veggies, ferns,etc.

If we can be of any help, let us know.

I'm a member of WV Master Gardeners and sometimes get to attend our state conventions, where we meet gardeners from all over our state. They are dedicated gardeners, so would certain;y know where to get good plants (Tom's place sounds like a good start). I'm not sure that there's a MG group in Pocohontas County--think not, as I don't remember meeting anyone from there. So instead of contacting them, as I would here, I'd suggest your friend contact her county extension agent to ask him/her and also inquire about a Master Gardener program. There's a very actibve group down in Greenbriar County...Maggie
