My Hayward Mango still flushing on Oct 11.

This tree in 2006 was 9' and had a couple dozen Manila Mangos. 2007's California freeze cut it to the ground..I almost tossed it in the recycle bin..now about 3' it's growing faster and faster.2011 is the year to hope for.

Did it die below the graft? If it did you should graft onto that new growth soon.

i am in awe of your mango tree. i am also in the bay area and hope to have as much success as you have had. i am going to start a blog so i will keep everyone updated.

Im growing Avacados and Mangos in Florida in the ground. We are in So. Florida. Trees are 1 1/2 yrs old and have tripled in size. They are planted in pure sand. No mulch, no nothing. We hardly water them because we do not have sprinklers and only use water for the flowers. Being new to these trees, my guess is they like to grow roots in a very well drained media (sand). They go dry for months on end. Of course, in a container, your can't let they dry out like Florida. I would repot in Spring. Get them out of coco fibre and plant in something that drains quickly. You could use a potting soil and mix a bag of perlite into it so you get good drainage. That's the easy way I would probably take. You could also mix some pine bark into MG potting mix (or whatever you like) and add perlite to that. My trees are growing in full Florida sun. These trees need strong light. Good luck, Jane

Thanks Sapote and mangodog. I will be interested to hear if you have success delaying your fruiting season on flowers you cut. Hopefully they don't just mature faster to get back on schedule. Are you intending to cut entire trees or just a portion of the flowers to see if you can extend an individual tree's fruiting?

Hard to be sure? It might be difficult to guess, there are just SO many different varieties out there...and if its a seedling even harder to know. The fruit itself looks similar to my Keitt...but the pretty colors on your new leaves and its growth habit is not that of a Keitt tree, here's a picture of my Keitt from 2012. Looks similar to yours, but again I'm sure there are many fruits that look similar visually... If there's fiber, there's a pretty good chance its a Tommy Atkins, but I believe there's a lot more red on a TA.. Below on the bottom of the screen is a link from TFN a picture of a Kent, the fruit looks similar to yours as well... I hope its fiberless, sweet and delicious, that's the important thing!! I have to say your tree is looking amazing!! Great comeback, you did a great job. BTW, home grown Tommy Atkins taste a lot better than the ones from the store which are picked when they are green...there was a large tree in my old neighborhood that produced some of the best tasting TA I've ever tasted! Tree ripened TA taste much better...not in my top 5 but way better than the store bought ones any day! Here is a link that might be useful: Kent mango...

Manila do best,But the closely related dwarf asian varietys should also be the same. Manila is just easier to find.
Plant in full sun,raised mound,DONT ever mulch under the tree. Watering is tricky Tammy. In the cool months or summer fogs-as little as possible. When we get those streaks of warm sunny to hot summer days-pour it on!
They can take about 32 with no real damage(leaves wont look so glossy) but under that-cover! And no potted mango does as well as one in ground. But that's the balance,once it's in ground-no going back. If a big freeze comes along,it will only do as well as you protect it and no more. Yet,Tammy,that summer in ground foliage looks soooo good-lol.

thanks for the tips stan. i want to eventually plant them in ground but we just moved to this house so i want to make sure to pick the optimal locations.

we had some record low's this past winter so any recommendations for covers...just an old sheet or better to buy a special cover?

also, did you buy your manila's here in the bay area? if so, where?

Mine was from Reagans in Fremont.But LaVerna supplys all the local nuserys,Home Depots and Lowe,etc. It would be hard to find a Mango for sale in the bay area that isn't Manila. It and other closely related like Champagne and Lon Doc are almost identical. Basically small fruited,mild Mango's that ripen in late summmer.
Cloth-blankets or commercial frost cloth is better then plastic. And plastic is much better than nothing at all despite what bad advice you might get about that.
