German Heads and site search.

OK, I have read quite a bit on these forums and I've seem people who are new here being told to use the "search" feature. I've also seen those same people say they have tried with dismal results.

A number of hours ago I was surfing for tomato seed online. By chance I happened upon a tomato called German Head. Nothing about the name to catch my attention but the photo ?

I had to click on it and there I found the closest thing to the tomato I've been looking for. They called it a pink but the picture was of an orange, green shouldered, lobed flattened oval with the narrow ends curled. The only thing that would keep me from thinking this was one and the same tomato I ate as a young teen was the size of the fruit.

The description of German head on this web site was far to vague so I did a Google search and was led here, to a thread called "German Head? Carolyn, it's all your fault"

Lots of people saying they were going to try this tomato but no one going back and saying how they turned out ! I used the site search for German Head, No luck. I returned to the thread and posted a reply then clicked "Return to Growing tomatoes forum" No post there. Hit the back key and there it was. returned to Growing once again and hit refresh. Nothing..

I typed "German Head? Carolyn, it's all your fault" into the search and not a thing. Could it be a problem with Firefox ? A return to Google and a search for German head returned me to that post. Back to Growing and nothing.

So now I'm worried that this is double posted in some arcane or archaic thread that will return to haunt me sometime in the future.

I just want to know first hand how those tomatoes tasted ! Sweet, tart, bland, etc.

I'm taking the blame for what? LOL

German HEad has long been known as a very good variety and it's on the sweet side, not bland and not tart. My adjectives for it, having grown it many times, is it's reliable and tastes great but would not be at the top of my list for great tasting varieties, regardless of color.

When you know the name of the variety you're looking for I'd start out at Tania's site before I'd do any Googling.

Below is a link to her site for German Head. Scroll down on that page to see pictures and sites where seeds are sold as well as a few opinions of it, although there are many more opinions from the SSE listings for it in the annual Yearbooks, for members only.

And with over 3,000 varieties featured I'm sure she hasn't had the time to update all of them for 2012 seed sources.

When you're through at that page go to the upper left and click on MAIN, which takes you back to the Home page and once there you can see all the ways that you can search for varieties.

When I know the name of a variety I use the alphabetical way and that link is on the Home page also.

Google searches pull up threads (discussions) that are in the GW archives - note the dates on the discussion - but no longer on the message board. Works the same on most all forums, not just GW.

Servers for this forum have a limited storage capacity and when a discussion gets to the bottom of the last page of this forum it falls off into the archives. It can only be accessed via off-site search, can be read and you can even add to it but it cannot be returned to active status on the forum.

And yes, just as with most discussion forums, getting folks to come back and report on results is a chronic problem. :)

I found this link through a google search. They're apparently very similar to Harsch crocks (though they have a slight barrel shape to them making the opening smaller than the widest part of the crock, so I like Harsch's design more ...) Lehmans German fermenting crocks It appears they also come with two-piece weighting stones, and have the water trough for airlock. A 10 liter crock (circa 2.65 gal) is US$86.00 (compare to about $124 for Harsch). No indication how much for shipping, but my guess is about $35 for UPS ground. They have a retail store in Kidron, Ohio. As of July 2009, they're backordered with expected resupply late August '09. Who knows though... And one other little factoid regarding Harsch crocks, apparently the US distributor is in Connecticut (which I learned talking to cust. support for this retailer http://www.canningpantry.com/sauerkraut-crocks.html ), so if you're in the Northeast, shipping time should be shorter (they're drop-shipped at least from this seller). cheers, -wayne

Is it a legit company? I'm a little confused by the site. It looks like the focus is on art when I click through the subjects or artists. When I use the search function, though, I'm seeing what looks like a lot of cheap stock photos. Also, the About Us page says that they're in Austin, but a number of the searched results labels are in what looks like German. Examples of what I'm talking about: I did a search for Thornton, because I'd seen something I liked by her elsewhere. OT. DH's office is on the 2nd floor. Our schnauzer goes up there every single day and keeps him company. He is DH's shadow. When DH travels, which he does often, the schnauzer is absolutely heartbroken. He goes upstairs 4-5 times a day, looking for DH, just in case he "overlooked him". I feel so bad for him and constantly tell him "daddy is coming back, don't you worry". Even though we have a very good sitter, I can't even bear to think how much harder it is on him when both of us are away, sigh. i posted this several times but once more won't hurt. The dog whisperer guy on TV says that to treat separation anxiety, you tell your dog you are leaving and the time you will be back. Then, upon returning, you tell him "see? I'm back!" I always say that and I truly feel like my doggies are a little calmer for it. I could be deluding myself, IDK, but I will continue to give them whatever reassurance I can. I love them so.

The thread you're looking for is the second. And lots of others you can check!

To do an Advanced Search, first enter a basic Google search, then go to the bottom of the results page and click on "Advanced Search." Add whatever you want on the Advanced Search page.

[IIRC, GW's search is not a Boolean search. So you'll get every thread where "German" appears and every thread where "Head" appears -- but most of the threads won't have both words, let alone both words together.]
