spring bulbs up??? It's December!

Help. My hyacinths are starting to poke up. My muscari leaves are up, but they do that. Hyacinths, never. Do I cover them back up for winter, or leave them be? Compounding things, we had our roof replaced and the roofers tried to be helpful and vacuumed up the beds of debris (and leaves that were mulching, and some of my fairly dormant columbine,and who knows what else.) So do I throw some dirt on these emerging bulbs? No sign of my daffs, glory-of-the-snow, snowdrops, tulips, or crocuses, just the hyacinths making that untimely appearance. They may be the ones I planted this fall. Thanks!

My hyacinth came up a bit last year during the warm spell we had in November. Heck, I had dahlias still in bloom into the end of November.

I wouldn't worry about them. They'll die back once the colder temps come.

OK, should I be alarmed that my lacecap hydrangea is beginning to leaf?

I haven't looked at most of the rest of the plants. I'm afraid to. It's 50 out again. Not that I'm complaining. :)

On a walk through of my flower beds I am seeing the daylilies and iris up, as well as the few tulips I put in last fall. Also, yarrow is back, I am seeing my purple and white coneflowers (transplants from a neighbor last year) poking little reddish shoots up, my potted blueberry bush is getting buds along the branches, my roses are putting up a bit of new growth, and one of my ornamental grasses has some green on it. On our enclosed deck my potted hostas, hydrangeas, and miniature roses are all coming back to life. And an asiatic lily that I bought last summer on clearance in a 3" inch pot, and then subsequently forgot all about and I assumed it was dead, got carried in by mistake when my kids helped me carry in the tender perennials and such. I meant to throw it away several time but kept forgetting. I noticed yesterday it is sending up new shoots! I have no idea how that thing survived my neglect. Nature is amazing! I wanted to put tons and tons of bulbs in my beds, but the drought we experienced here last summer and fall left the ground like cement. We couldn't even bust into it with a pickaxe. So we couldn't get bulbs in the ground. :-( Maybe this year I can!

Hey everyone! Remy! Love your video. That lilac did look super tough to be blooming for being so little. Michelle, So sorry to hear about your migraines! They are the worst!! I received my package from you today though :D In my package was: Iris: Maid of Orange (LOVE IT!) Iris: Batik...so pretty! Aloe baby Tropical Milkweed 3 mystery daylilies ( I can't wait to see them flower!) Will be planting them tomorrow for my mother's day garden day! :) And I received a beautiful card, miracle grow singles (I've never seen these before! They look way more easy to use than the big boxes I buy), and last but certainly not least the absolute cutest cactus I have ever seen!! Bulbs came up in December after warm weather

I saw this as an opportunity! Since I needed to fetch several that have "migrated" as well as relocate many of our bulbs to ensure I don't damage them while installing the Red Raspberry, Brandywine Purple Raspberry, Autumn Gold Raspberry and BlackBerry plants I'll be putting in in the next few weeks, I used this opportunity to carefully dig and divide all the bulbs that were sprouting, and place them in a temporary bed until they freeze, die back, and go dormant again. I was pleasantly surprised to find quite a few earth worms in the planting beds and only one solitary grub. and I was happy to see this brick-quarry y'all call "soil" down here is finally softening up and getting loamy like real dirt is supposed to be. It has only taken 4 years and double digging several yards of compost, leaf mold, and mulch, to get it there though. arrgh! Ohh bulbs, yeah... Perfect opportunity to dig and divide them, yeah!

I've got reticulated irises trying to come up. That happens most winters, I just ignore them and they do fine. I'd add some mulch to the columbine just in case, but there's not much you can do about the hydrangea. I noticed yesterday that one of my clematis has some green showing in the leaf buds. I seem to remember that happening before and it did just fine in the spring, so I choose not to worry about what I can't help.

It sure has SOUNDED like spring here lately - the birds have been singing like it was late March instead of mid December. . . .

Heh. My lenten rose appears to be budded. Perhaps with the warm weather it wants to be an advent rose this year.

Hyacinths are still just peeking at the tips, no bud/bloom. Hydrangeas are leafing. Some muscari greens are up. New growth on the Jupiter's Beard, and I think those may be new leaves on the black-eyed susans.

So what season is it? Oh,yeah, first day of winter.

It has been a while since I popped in but husky's email prompted me to check in to see what is going on and this post caught my eye as I had just finished a walk around the yard and boy was I surprised.

My daffs and tulips are about 2-3 inches tall. My alliums are up but not blooming. My lenten rose is blooming like crazy, One of my red buckeyes is budded out and the rhododendron buds are swelling quite a bit and I still have one snapdragon that is still green and healthy but not blooming. I am not concerned about the bulbs or the snapdragon but I am about the other plants that are coming up, out or blooming out of season. If winter decides to hit now I may lose these plants. Personally I am loving this weather.
