Any bear sightings in the last few weeks?

Hi Everyone,

As you may remember I had a bear in my yard last spring and I am in a populated and commercial area.This has peeked my interest in bear sightings in residential area.

As of last weekend several friends have also had bear in their yards . They live in populated and wooded area , one area has had the same bear all summer . Feeding birds is not a good idea in summer in these areas anymore as the bear have come up to houses and even climbed on houses to get that birdseed . Here is a picture from last year in a friends yard, mine was larger but was later destroyed by Encon. Have you seen any in the last few weeks?

I haven't seen any bears up here in years in the populated areas. For the past few weeks drivers in my area have been "plagued" by moose.

Please refresh my memory Adirondack gardener as to where you are ?
A moose is the next beast I would love to get a photoshot of in my yard.There was one in the area last year until a car got it.

Thanks for all the kind words, everybody! To try to answer a few questions, though, yes, these are all my crosses. Sorry for the lack of information, as I usually just wander through and shoot photos without remembering which cross goes with which photo. I grow all of my seelings in gallon pots, and by the time I transplant then from community pots into 4 inch and 4 inch into gallons, they get all mixed up instead of being in easily identified locations. #s 1, 3 and 6 all come from Doves in Flight by Mary Gaskins. It typically stamps its seedlings with very clear eyes. I can just about wander through the seedlings and pick out its kids. #2 is from Premier Surprise X Lavender Tomorrow. #4 is from two different seedlings. # 5 and 7 are both from Ledgewood's Oriental Silk. I seem to remember that at least one, if not both were dormants (I seperated out a bunch of dormant seedings during winter). # 7 is from seedling crosses. and #9 I think may be from Palace Garden Beauty X Levi Davis. Wetsuitor: The only ones I dug up this year were 4 washies and a sago palm, each of which would take considerable protection here including heat. I will be leaving those in when they get 2 big to handle, but the washies seem to take root distubance very well and overwinter well indoors. There is of course some set back and it is slow to get growing in the spring, however I'm not ready to get into an elaborate heating system yet. I'm trying to work out my kinks this year on a trachy. Plus my wife would kill me if I had Jim's setup! I live in maybe the coldest winter 6a in America. This will be my 3rd winter here, the lowest low each of the past 2 years is -2, and -8F, HOWEVER, it is the norm to go 3 weeks at a time never getting above freezing. Last December and January, we had 9 days that got above freezing during the day, and most of those were in the 33-38F range for highs. We also had 2 3-weeks seesions of consecutive below freezing weather. The other problem is that I generally don't see grass from Dec.1 to mid-March, it never gets warm enough to ever melt the snow. Last year I lost 2 decent sized trachies and a sabal palmetto, and my minors and needle that survived received considerable damage, the minors burned 98%, the only things left were the emerging spears. Needle had spear pull with surving pups. That was with frost cloth wrapped unheated leaf cages, which provided 0-30% damage and no losses the year before.

Beth for Kya, what you�ll need to do is train the leave it command...Anytime Kya gets anywhere near the sprinkler or any rose bush you shout "leave it", and then the working command come! to substitute the behavior and give her a small treat or a good play tuggy session. Tuggy whether it's a soft toy or a tennis ball attached to the rope allows Kya to work off her Border Collie side of the gene pool by tugging and growling and shaking that tuggy. Most B.Cs love tuggies because they get eye contact with their owner and a real hand to body interaction with their owner.... We adore you here Inga, (rosie smiles and hugs) but hehe, that muzzle suggestion would throw most Border Collie owners into seizures because BCS are extremely hyper-sensitive dogs. And my Eluane is now cringing and trembling in her corner. Also people need to understand the Border Collie's obsession with chasing and herd water. Never run the sprinklers while she is in the backyard. Save it for pre-dawn with a set timer. Take a look at this link.. It tells the whole story, about how water spraying makes B.Cs go cuckoo. They think of it as time to pounce attack and play! Beth the only reason why I didn't tell you this right away was because I wanted to be sure everyone wrote their fan replies on your beautiful roses first before I derailed everyone on Border Collie issues, lol! Border Collies and Sprinklers Once you own a border collie or a B.C. mix great efforts have to be made to understand the breed so that you can really enjoy them and understand how to work with them.... They require tons of time and attention to train but they are so brilliant. Border collies do not settle down until 3.5 years of age and even when they do settle, to be a truly happy dog, an owner has to be able to give them a job to do and to engage them as much as possible. They were always meant to accompany a shepherd 24-7. That is why one has to treat them as if you were their shepherd. That's why most owners have to do things like dog agility, frisbee competitions that sort of thing....But with BCs you get endless devotion and excitement, lol! Life never gets boring when one owns a border collie! :D

I've just decided that I'm not going to worry about it. I'll go to the meeting and "protest" with the others, but, honestly, if they don't take our property to build anything, we will just stay here more than likely. It will not be fun being so close to a turnpike, though. My BIL said a developer will probably want our neighborhood at some point if the turnpike people don't take it. I guess, my things is--how much more do we put into this property if they'll force us out? This is not a fancy property at all OR a fancy house. We bought here because it really is just the perfect size for all we want to do. Our last house in a regular neighborhood was fancy and large, but had almost no backyard. I don't want to go into mega debt to buy a large piece of property. I'm sure we would qualify, but at our age, do we want a large house debt? We've paid this house down quite a bit since living here, plus used our money to add a 1200 sq ft. shop and do some remodeling--the entire kitchen, living, dining, and utility was gutted. The hall bath was remodeled a year ago. Tom did most of the work on the bathroom, though. Our bedrooms and other bathroom need help. The carpet and other bathroom especially. BUT, do we spend the time and money doing that? Also, just the work of adding the gardens and remodeling a 12'x16' shed into a nice coop. I just think of how much work I did on the kitchen garden--it took a couple of years to dig out all of the bermuda grass. But ya know, the local news keeps showing the same picture of Franklin NOT Indian Hills when it talks about the new turnpikes. It's the next main road to our south. To me, it makes more sense to use Franklin. Seems like there's less development. Except Toby Keith's house. lol. And his Hollywood Corners place. Oh, and the votech. We will just see what happens. Either we will stay, or we will be forced out. Whatever happens, we will bloom where we are planted. I'm not sore from my fall. Thank goodness. I might have a bruise. Once I realized I was not going to be able to stop it, I let myself just fall without tensing up. I've been sick a lot in 2022. It's like the first year I worked with children--was literally sick half the year. Maybe our immune systems were weakened from not being exposed for a couple of years. It's like starting over. What is everyone up to this weekend?

Kareen, I'm north of Lake Placid/Saranac Lake, near Franklin Falls. I never saw an eastern moose, but I know they're out there from reports of track sightings to the 3 recent moose/car accidents nearby, two just a few miles from here.

They stay pretty much away from human habitation if they can.

I don't think we have any bears here in Niagara county but you never know. all I see here are deer, coyote, red fox, bunnies skunks, possums, ground hogs and racoons and I live just a few yards from a very busy boulevard. I think seeing a bear here would stop traffic all over town.

I have not seen any bear recently although I am told that they are still all over our area (Palenville, NY). My neighbor did see a coyote in their front lawn a few weeks ago.

I don't put any bird seed outside which I think has kept the bear from hanging out on our property. We have seen one bear that seems to cross our property to get to the farm on the other side of the road. Our contractor has seen the same bear a lot.

There was one seen by my neighbor on the other side of the road from me last Thursday or Friday. It destroyed the bird feeder in their yard.
They seem to expect these things, but I'm still a Brooklyn gal, dislocated as I may be!
I have a bunch of photos of the coyote dancing in the field behind me. It lives by the creek behind the hay field. Makes me a tad worried for the 4 legged ones I live with!
I'm just in the middle between Binghamton and Whitney Point.

I just saw a scratched up tree trunk with ripped off bark and claw marks on my road. I don't know if it's our bear, but those claw marks were very wide. I live in West Hurley by the Ashokan Reservoir (east of Kingston).

Does any other animal do this?

Not putting out the birdseed yet!

Susanzone5: A few years ago I went for a hike in the Windsor NY are. It was Christmas week. There was spotty areas of snow on the ground. The air was bite your cheeks cold but the sun felt warm. I was walking and stopping every now and then. I stopped at the base of the mountain to look around. Just as I stopped a medium size bear ran up the hill into some spruce trees. She ran from a blow down not 15 yards from where I stopped. As I looked around I saw movement from the other side of the tree.8 short black legs turned into two small cubs. I watched them for several minute. The mother didn't go far. I walked out around where they were. I walked an old snow covered logging road just above where mom ran.She never crossed the road.Again this was Christmas week.Bears in this area do not always den up at a set time. Males will wonder on warm or sunny winter days looking for food.I don't believe a mother bear would den next to a blow down that offers sparse cover.Males will den in any spot that looks comfy.It looks like your bird feeder might not be safe except for the dead of winter.

We just had a bear in our yard a couple weeks ago. We are NOT in a rural area. Rather, the bear had to trek down through the suburbs and across a couple major roads and a RR track to end up in our back yard. Surprised us, that's for sure. I posted it on here under the thread "I tawt I taw. . . ."

Wow , I was surprised to see this post come back to life from '05. Thanks for the recent responses. I have seen no bear in the hood this year but I believe I saw a red fox and its pup walking up our creek bed. Unfortunately I was unable to get a photo. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays everyone. last night a 2-3 yera old black bear came up on my back porch. i had apples on the lawn for the deer but he was more intrested in the bird seed in a small trach can i keep on the porch. this was t 8:00 pm on thurs. evening 4/14/11. he came on and off the porch many times because my dog would go to the door. after the forth time , he stayed and ate from what he had emptyed from the can for a good 10 minutes. long enough for me to take video. very exciting yet apprehensive at this point. he will most likely come back tonight to see if he can eat again.

Several reports on the local news this week of bears raiding bird feeders, etc. They said people are asked to remove feeders and other pet food from outside areas.

Palenville, NY..... Sightings here in Palenville are on a daily basis! Early evening and between 7 am-8:30 am. One very large male, one average sized female, and what looks to be a yearling! Don't bother anything just search the front yard for insects, and left over bird seed from the day before. What a sight to see! A magnificent animal to say the least.
