Internet problems...unable to access forum

I have been having internet connection issues for over a month now. First it was b/c the squirrels had chewed the cable lines and now Time Warner is telling me that there is a high speed issue in the Buffalo/Niagara area. There are days when I can't get online or get mail at all so for those that may have emailed me and didn't get a reply that is why. Hopefully they will get it fixed soon.

Husky & Remy, don't know if you have emailed me or not and don't know if it is too late in the year to get together. I do still have seed for you both. Am doing cuttings now of some salvias so I don't have to bring the big plants in for the winter this year.

You're not alone, Penny. When Adelphia service was taken over by Time Warner, I had incredible problems, with no service for big parts of the day on a regular basis. My business depends on reliable internet connection for not only email, and internet access but to send and receive large drawing files. My phone service is also through the internet so when the cable goes down, I am dead in the water. (Nothing to do but go out and work in the garden.)

I just moved over the last few weeks and thought I was going to be in trouble since there is no cable out in this remote part of the Adirondacks, but I was surprised that high-speed DSL was available and I find the connection speed to be acceptable, even for VOIP. And it hasn't gone down even once since I've been here.

Of course, you can't watch Wheel Of Torture and other mindless TV junk over the DSL line.

We are still waiting for Verizon to move into our part of town but so far all we have available is cable and time warner is it. As soon as we can get Verizon, it will be good bye to time warner!

I truly appreciate all your help mikie!It is so difficult for me to explain exactly what is going on.I only know computer basics and just enough terminology to be confusing. LOL Currently,I am connecting to the internet by going to Earthlink.net and clicking on the set up button. I am accessing my e-mail through Earthlink.net, too. That is the only way I can connect to webpages.I can no longer connect using on desktop icons or by going to internet connections. The problem started when I allowed a Belkin auto setup to program my wireless router to my computer. Even if I disconnect the router and try to connect the way I did before the router I still can not connect through my computer. The only reason I mentioned proxy server was that when earthlink had me join teamviewer4, teamviewer4 stated I was on a proxy server and that I needed to connect with my computer connection. I am basing my statement on that info. I may not be on a proxy server. Is connecting through Earthlink.net connecting to a proxy server? I have not called earthlink back yet as the tech seems to get frustrated with my problem before it can be corrected. Also, it is a minimum 1 hour call each time.

Another thing to consider is a wireless internet provider (WISP). After suffering with dial up for years waiting on cable or DSL to reach me, a WISP finally started service in my area. Although I've only had my wireless service for a few days, so far I am very impressed. I appear to get faster service than the LAN at my employer. WISPs use a radio signal to send the data to a small antenna at your house. The WISP will provide a modem and from there is very similar to cable or DSL. WISPs are generally cheaper and more reliable than satellite internet (no rain fade)and can be much faster. For TV, satellite might be your only option, but both DirecTV and DishNetwork offer competitive plans that should work as long as you have an unobstructed view to the satellite. There are usually plenty of good first time subscriber offers available from both companies in which you can get receivers for up to 4 rooms for free or with one DVR for around $50. Remind your Bad Selves about that when you feel like it'll never end -- and it's been a couple of years. [snort] You signed up for it! Run with it and make it beautiful. My Bad Self should have said, "we have the slowest reno planning in the history of mankind." The only kitchen action has been removing wallpaper, replacing a few appliances, and the ceiling fan, after it helicoptered itself out of the ceiling. Happily, it dented the breakfast table, and not my head, nearby. But I digress. WeÃ¢ÂÂve been talking about the kitchen for nine years. It keeps getting bumped by needed repairs (new windows, HVAC, electrical service, crumbly adobe exterior); by my decision to build a greenhouse (yay!) and by our enjoyment of working on our big desert yard. IÃ¢ÂÂm a caregiver for my Mom, who lives nearby, so we maintain both houses. MomÃ¢ÂÂs medical issues land her in the hospital regularly. After I live with her for a while, or get her through weeks in a rehab hospital, I just donÃ¢ÂÂt have the heart to start changing walls. I lose the wind in my sails. About six years ago, we hired a designer to help us figure out the kitchen dilemma. Met him at a home show; OMG, I was so excited! Paid a deposit of half, after the initial consult, and then he disappeared. We called, and he showed up a few days later with drawings I could have done in about three hours. No ideas, no help. (I know this sounds unlikely, but trust me.) I didnÃ¢ÂÂt know what to do. I was ashamed of myself for not researching him more thoroughly. About five days later, he started dunning us by mail to pay the second half. We did; I just it over. Poof went a four-figure fee (a chunk of change, for us) and the wind in my sails. Rats! Soon after, the golf course adjoining our neighborhood went bankrupt, dropping home values. (Oh, good.) Major investments in the house seemed less wise. However, things are looking up, finally, with a new medical park, on the derelict land. (Hooray.) Battling on, in February, I did a thread about our kitchen, and everyone here came to the rescue, with tons of wonderful real help, ideas, and thoughtful discussion. Then I had to help Mom through another medical hurdle... IÃ¢ÂÂm back again, thanks to the encouragement I find here. And eventually, I still think we can make it beautiful! We may crawl, instead of run, but thatÃ¢ÂÂs truly OK; progress is progress. And that, CEFreeman, is the genius behind this thread you started, to celebrate small accomplishments. Thank you! Couple notes: I've used the T&B Snap N Seal coax connectors with a lot of success. The tool may be more expensive than the Klein one, but it's what all the installers that have worked on our DTV over the years have used. I bought one many years ago, and I think they've at least gotten cheaper. I wouldn't do anything that requires that you have to terminate Ethernet cable into male connectors. This is a pain to do, and pre-terminated patch cables are cheap. Terminating into female Keystone wall jacks is much easier- just maintain the twist of each pair as close to the termination as you can (there are many videos on doing this). I like the impact version of the punch-down tool- not sure if a different version will cut the wires. I bought one of the cheap ones from HD that had bad reviews and it's held up so far- maybe it would be bad if you used it all the time for dozens/hundreds of terminations. We have an old house (built in '49) and I've wired or rewired a big chunk of it. I've also put a lot into improving the insulation and air sealing. For that reason, I would hesitate to use open back wall boxes. I have had great success with retrofit or "old work" boxes- it's so much easier to just cut out an old box (hack saw or reciprocating saw to the nails), reach in to fish new wires, then slip a retrofit box into the hole. I tend to do some combination of a gasket under the wall plate, caulk, and/or expanding foam in the holes in the back of the box. It's great to get it right the first time, but I also wouldn't hesitate to cut a hole in the wall or replace a box to get what I needed later. Lastly, Russ is talking about 120V AC (lights, receptacles, etc) or 240V AC (dryer, oven, e.g.) when he says "HV." I'm used to working with industrial facilities where these are still considered low voltage, and there's 4160V or 12kV that's "medium voltage." High voltage is utility transmission wiring. Good suggestions otherwise.

I was wondering where you went! And I am an idiot. It just hit me that I do have your phone number. Well, I'm glad it was just bad internet service that kept you away.
I took a great leap of faith and I planted the Salvias, Black and Blue and VanRemsen, along the south side of the house where Tutti Fruitti is happy. I also planted the Red Yucca there. I have no room left at the inn, lol. I aquired a blue passion fruit vine, so that has to come in. I'm also taking cuttings of my Red Leaf Hibiscus because that is tropical. So along with my other items like the Brug, and the Key Lime, I really do not have room where there is enough light.
I also feel like I got seeds in a trade that I thought you would possibly like, but I can't remember of what right now! I'm losing my mind,lol.

Penny & Remy, I'd still love to get together, garden is fading but maybe you can at least see the brugs in bloom. Got a wedding this Saturday but open all the rest of the time. Husky

Brugs in bloom??!! Please post photos! My brug has lots of buds right now, I'm hoping they bloom before frost. Next year they will get in earlier.

My passion vine has just started blooming and it's gorgeous! Thanks Kathy

I have my internet problems hopefully fixed. I sent you and Remy and email. The first one I sent came back as I put dot com instead of dot net so I resent the one I sent to Remy to you. I think I am pretty much open so will see what Remy has available.

I tried to switch from Adelphia to Verizon DSL, but canceled the DSL in the first week. Since I'm in a rural area, I'm too far from the Verizon "switching station (?)" to get reliable service. It was AWFUL!! The 3rd tech I spoke to told me it was definitely my computer ... what nonsense.

I learned a lesson ... I googled Verizon DSL after I signed up and read all the complaints about their service too. Though not everyone has a problem. Being rural was really a problem.

Thank goodness for the 30 day money back guarantee ...
