Why are Angora Super Sweet so slow to grow? (pic)

Both of these seeds were planted on the same day. The Brandywine is growing at a normal pace while the Angora Super Sweet is just poking along. I even transplanted it to a bigger pot hoping it would take off. But like the other three I have in cups they're all about the same size. Any suggestions? -

That's a good question. Not having grown from seed before I'm getting the same symptoms with Black Cherry as opposed to Neves Azorian Red. The Neves is growing fatter every day and the Black Cherry seems to have stalled. Let's hope Carolyn137 chimes in and gives us the skinny on these conditions. Hello.....Carolyn.......are you there?

The proper name for Angora Super Sweet is Velvet Red, and by any other name there shouldn't be any problems with germination or growth.

What was the origin of your seeds?

And was germination OK as compared to others you're growing this year?

You can continue to guess and guess, but if you haven't determined the quality of your soil, there is one way to know for sure. Get your soil tested by a lab. It's always the first place to start with a garden. You save a lot of time and money in the long run. Check with your state's Extension Service. Each county should have it's own Cooperative Extension Office which provides free publications and information for the asking. They can provide you with soil testing information. Mine was only $9.00, less than the cost of some strictly pH tests, and far more thorough. No guessing at what might need to be added, no money wasted. I also wonder about your soil tilth and friability. It doesn't look like you planted your melons by hilling or mounding. Melons don't like 'wet feet', they prefer plenty of drainage. i have 3 Kona plants i bought from hawaii through ebay about April-May 07. i first put them in 10 inch pots and indirect light by a sliding glass door and they were healthy but grew very slow and leaf sets were very close together for about 1 year (fed all-purpose soluble fert and superthrive) i moved in march and now have them in an east facing window so they catch direct morning sun and they took off! ive had 3-4 sets of new leaves since changing locations and they are HUGE! when i moved them to the new window i also stopped using fert and only feed them with fishtank water. (all houseplants will go bananas for fish tank waste/water) because of the growth spurt i wanted to check the roots and be sure they weren't confined(coffeeplants need deep pots because they have a main taproot like a carrot and 2 diagonal "anchor" roots- however ive also seen pictures of a very healthy arabica plant about 6 ft tall in a 1 gal container so...?)they where fine and since i had the roots out and exposed, i innoculated them with mycorrhizal fungi for its beneifts ( forms an organic symbiotic relationship with roots and cuts down on fertilizers/ pesticides.) can't wait to see what happens next!! i also had browning leaves in the beginning but it stopped on its own.every 2 weeks, i flood the plants for 30 min and drain(in the bathtub with fishwater), and give one 8 ounce glass of water in the weeks between. when a plant uses nutrients in the soil it will release a nitrogen gas and these gases are bad for the plant and roots. flooding displaces the gases and drags fresh oxygen down to the soil- so flood technique is good. however, when i took my plants out to innoculate the roots, i noticed severe soil compactation (most likely from the flood technique) and the dirt smelled SO bad. partly because i use stinky fish water but also because the dirt was way to tight to let those gases out. i added some sand in the soil and mixed/loosened in a giant bowl to help with drainage. soil mix is mostly all potting soil from wal-mart, sand, spent coffee grounds, cruched egg shells and one tsp. mycorrhizal fungi per pot. sorry so longwinded- i hope this helps. if you have more questions let me know. i'm fascinated and have done a lot of research on coffee plants and grapevines. happy to help :) find fungi cheap at http://www.bghydro.com/BGH/itemdesc.asp?ic=NEGRM16 i bought a pound(thats a lot)for $11 plus $8 shipping.

Sure wish you'd put your location or at least your garden zone in your posts - see the box provided for it? Or go to your profile page and fill it out so that it is included automatically.. Refresh my memory - where are you? 30 degree nights means it is too early for plants to be out anyway without a great deal of cover/protection so it is possible that is just environmental damage. But it appears to be awfully extensive so since it has been outside it is possible that it is one of the common tomato diseases - simply can't say from the picture. Either way strip off any affected foliage and monitor it closely. If the new growth appears healthy then it is probably just exposure damage. Dave

It is along the property line, and the main leader got damaged, I cut it down, and these 4 are here now. You can see why I asked about slow growth, the original trunk was not too much taller than the 4 that sprung up, it was about 4 ft at it's tallest. I'll try what you said Bama, and see what happens.

Origin of seeds were from Tomato Fest.

Germination was not OK compared to all of the other seeds that I started on 2/9. Everything sprouted in about 10 days but the Velvet Reds didn't sprout for over 3 weeks. I was just about to put more seeds in the cups when they popped up. All seeds were started with MG seedling mix. All received the same amount of sun and water. No fertilizer has been used yet.

carolyn 137 - Thank you for responding so soon. The NAR came from TGS and they gave about 60% germination and grow quite well. The Black Cherry was elsewhere and I can't remember where but they sprout well and then just sit there with the first true leaves s-l-o-w-l-y growing. I have mistakenly thought that different varieties grow at singular rates but I'm apparently wrong. Again, thank you for your response. I'll nurture them along and possibly they'll come out of the slump. Take care.

I don't have singular pics to show you right now but I can say that Red Robin has demonstrated its small size but also a very vigorous plant from day one in this first yr. of growth.

I can also say that Cherokee purple was a slow, early seedling but is exploding into a vigorous plant.

Multiple folks much more knowledgeble than myself have assured that puny seedlings can produce robust plants.

I hope so since my Mortgage Lifters seem well behind the others.

There have been a few comments here about poor germination of some varieties from Tomatofest but since the search feature isn't working I can't link you to a specific thread.

I suspect the problem might be that the seeds were rather old since they took so long to germinate and are slow growing.

If so, they should start growing better soon as they put on more leaves and you can give them a dilute foliar feed of fish or seaweed if you wish.

I happened to notice in your picture your Red Brandywine plant and I don't think it's RB b/c the foliage is PL and RB has RL foliage. What was your seed source for the Red Brandywine?
