Have you used any weed killer anywhere nearby?

Oooh good call Jean, looks like Roundup damage to me too. If you didn't use it, maybe it was a neighbor. It can really drift. Anyway, if that's what is causing it, the plant will grow out of it and be OK.

Looks like mine that got a whiff of 2-4-D last year. The 2-4-D was in a 5-gallon "sealed" steel drum in the garage where I had the babies under the lights. When it got hot in the garage the 2-4-D fumes would apparently leak out....We're talking a couple ppm concentration in the air. Nasty stuff for tomatoes.

Anybody else want to diagnose? There was no weed killer or chemicals used around the plant. The are other plants in the same area and none of them have been affected like the German Red Strawberry. Like I said the bottom two thirds of the plant is fine. The top has stop growing but looks green and alive, its really weird. The baby leaves and branches on the top of the plant have turned upside down. Is it possible the plant is sensitive to really hot days?

I'm no tomato expert, not even close. But i work with finicky roses.

Since whatever it is looks like it's attacking younger leaves and ignoring the older leaves, you might want to inspect for aphids, mites (like spider mites), leafhoppers, etc. -- any insect that is juice sucking.

I've looked at the pictures several time and I'd like to know if the greyish leaves and petioles are for real since you haven't mentioned that and say that the foliage is green.

I ask b'c I didn't think it was chemical damage, it looks to me like an infectious problem, but what I'm thinking about makes absolutely no sense if only ONE plant is affected.

Did you raise all your plants from seed? If you bought some did you buy the GRS somewhere different from the others?

I did raise all of my plants from seed. The GRS was by far the most healthy thick stemed plant I had before and after I planted. Then all of a sudden this happened. I can tell you that I first noticed this at the end of a pretty warm day about two weeks ago. My seed sources are Marianna's and TomatoFest. The GRS seed is from TomatoFest. And yes there still green on the top of the leaves. Here are more recent pics.

So you're saying what I thought was grey, wasn't. No doubt it was a lighting/photo problem?

If we take the gray leaves and petioles and bending of the petioles ( short stems that hold the blossoms) out of the picture I don't see where the problems is?

GRS has finely dissected foliage that flops around early in the season, and that's about what I see.

I've probably grown it more than most folks b'c I introduced it, from seeds from Marjorie Morris of IN, and it sure can get hot where I used to grow as well and that never bothered it at all.

So I say, what am I missing? ( smile)

Are heart shaped varieties prone to this behavior? My Anna Russian had that same wispy, wimpy, look about them. Isn't possible that some varieties are simply more sensitive to heat or other environmental changes?

I just dont understand why the GRS I'm growing went from stout and healthy the first 11 weeks and then turn around and go wimpy, flopy, twisty and slowed growth on me. It just seems to me that if the character of this plant was wimpy and twisty wouldn't it have started out that way. So I say maybe I'm missing something and this is just normal for GRS to do thing backwards. Anyway, thank you for responding.

Yes, most heart shaped varieties do start out wimpy and most do have wispy, droopy, narrow dissected leaves but for most folks they may sulk a bit but then take off and grow perfectly well, altho retaining the traits I just mentioned re foliage.

It's perfectly possible that some heart varieties might be more sensitive to heat or other environmental conditions in terms of what's being discussed here, but I've not seen anyone say so and I've not experienced it myself.

I had an Orange Oxheart last year, that started out looking just like your plant, I just knew it was going to die. Then it finally took off and became the most massive, enourmous tomato plant that I had.

The 2 German Red Strawberry plants I have look exactly like yours. My 44 other plants look perfectly normal. Where did you get your seed? I got mine from Tomatofest. Theresa

I finally had enough time to read all the post and saw that your seeds came from Tomatofest also.( I should know by now not to post before reading everything). Would be interested in knowing what might have caused this. Mine are still struggling along, so there's still hope. Theresa (who has mayflies flying around her head & the computer at this moment***but that's a good thing, the birds are in heaven)

OK its official, the under sides of the leaves are gray on my German Red Strawberry! Is this a desease? Should I pull it? Carolyn? Anybody? Help please.

I've attemted to grow GRS, here in S.Calif, 2 different seasons in the past. I had no problems starting from seed and planting them out at around 8-9 weeks in the mid to end of April. Both seasons were warm from the start (high 70's to low 80's)and I slowly watched them waste away over a 4-5 week period with temps in the 90's. It never set fruit and I pulled them. Silvery Fir Tree and Sylvan Guame, grown at the same time, both sorta melted away, but I did get a few tom's off them. I have 2 Sylvan Guame this year (planted out on 3/28)and both plants droop when the sun is out and are bit behind the other 28 plants I have in the ground. They both have shown similar purple coloring under the leaves with the overcast weather this week. I'll see if that clears up today, as the sun has decided to come out an hour or so ago. Bottom line is, I haven't much luck with plants with "wispy" type foliage and the heat.
