Is it normal for German Red Strawberry plants to be somewhat leggy and limp compared to the others in the garden (I have Stupice, Sungold, Cherokee Purple, Kellogg's Breakfast, Black Cherry, a lot of the "standards")?

Yes Becky, it's quite normal for GRS, as is true with most heart shaped varieties, to have wispy droopy foliage with finely dissected leaves and stems that may or may not be as sturdy as others.

Just a few genetic traits that do show up with GRS and most other heart shaped varieties.

Would trying another seed source maybe help with the "sickly" plants since aphids seem to be attracted to it. I have Opalka so I'm familiar with the wispy droopy foliage but they are healthy looking in every other regard.

If it appears to be infecting other neighbors the pull it.

here's that trait on non-heart potato leaf varieties. I think of it more like endive leaves. Especially since the margins of the leaves curl and contort the way an endive leaf does. I believe this to be a recessive trait based on the way it segregated and has remained stable within in a sib line (these are F5's)

Believe it or not this is actually a PL. It isnt as droopy right now because the rain has made them more turgid.

Hmm...I'm growing GRS for the first time this year, and just yesterday noticed that the plant looked a lot healthier and sturdier than I expected it to be. (This is one crazy little hobby of mine when I get concerned about one of my plants looking a little too heathy.) I just decided that GRS would be more like Russian #117 than Opalka, Anna Russian or Orange Banana: a little droopy, but not super droopy.

I know I have another GRS in my garden. I should probably take a look at it to see if it is any different. (I had some issues with a couple of my labels fading. It's possible that my healthy plant is actaully Ste. Lucie or something like that. Oops.)

I am growing GRS and it looked so bad at one point I thought maybe I should pull it. I'm glad I didn't. It is getting loaded up with mators and then I found out that it's pretty standard for this plant to look a little spindly.
