Uncovering winter sown plants

From what I've read, it sounds like many of you have taken off your covers and are even planting... Is it okay to take the covers off now??? We had a hard frost this morning but it now looks like better weather is on its way. I'm not sure what zone I'm in. One map says 6b, one says 5b. I'm located in Wayne County which right between Monroe Co. (Rochester) and Onondaga Co. (Syracuse).

It all depends of how protected your plants are, but I have started planting some a week ago (Bachelor's buttons, malvas, calendulas among them). I even transplanted lettuce as soon as they came up-a month ago?. They are all doing well. Penny even did her Morning glories! Last night's frost did not damage anything. Of course, again, it all depends of the type of plants and the protection--what I have transplanted thus far, is among tulips--which does give much protection. I am always more concerned about 'heavy rain' than I am of a reasonable frost.

I am about to do much more now.

I believe Rochester is in zone 6. If you type your zip code in the Park's site, you should get your zone.

Thank you, Anne Marie. I'm not ready to plant out yet, but still worried about taking the covers off completely...

Yes, your map link shows me in zone 6.

I appreciate your kind offer - I already have tons of catmint because it does so well in my area (near Albuquerque New Mexico) but went on a winter sowing frenzy in March and the catmint was part of it. I have since divided some of the bigger ones I have and tried a few different varieties from Bluestone Perennials. I'll bet there are people out there who would love to have the plants, though.

I ws'd compass plant from seed 5 years ago. Can give you seeds from last years flower. I had to wait 4 years for a flower, but it might have been in a really dry area and could bloom earlier for you if you give it more attention than I did. Last year the flower stalks got at least 10 foot tall. I moved it to a place that gets less sun and they're only about 4 foot this year. Happy surprise - they have a long tap root and I was worried about moving it, but it came back without a problem in its new home - AND - the tap root left behind is growing a new plant in the old location!

The statue was a Christmas gift from my husband and daughters about 5 years ago. Her name is Fiona and she guards this spot every growing season. I love faries and have a small collection of which she is the largest. When this Sundown started to bloom the petals were very thin, sort of curled and more pink than orange. The older the blooms get the wider and more glowing orange the petals get. It seems to be different every day and there are plenty of buds forming. Melba, I sincerely hope and am definately going to try to get seeds from this beauty. I definately want more and am thinking of trying to root some cuttings. Please remind me that you would like some seeds as I would like to share. GGG, thanks for the comments and interest to see more. It is difficult on this forum because of how little I have to share of my ws success...I'm still waiting for blooms and the time to get more pictures. ...and I would plant them out! Those are all cool season crops. If you have enough, you could try planting a few out. Once you start planting, it is important to keep them watered until they settle in. That was the hardest part when I started planting, keeping up with the watering. We should be getting rain this week, so, that is good news. When I wintersowed, I planted as soon as they had leaves, real leaves :) You will be amazed by their roots.

YES.. do take your covers OFF, Kathy, especially if your containers are wet, as mine were after the snow melted.. a long time ago. You can always put them back if necessary. We have so many SQUIRRELS in our backyard getting into everything that mine are covered with a grid.

I planted my winter sown stuff already, after all, they've been hardening off all along. I did lose some plants, not from frost, but heat. We had some unseasonably hot weather, and the plants I still had covered, in containers got a little fried from the heat.
