successfully fruit 3yr old jaboticaba in NY!

Not the classic jaboticaba but in the family. These are supposed to take several years to fruit under ideal conditions. Incredibly (at least to me anyway), this has produced 4 small fruit after only 3 years or so- and in NY to boot. The fruit were on the small size - about cherry tomato size and the skin was a tiny bit on the thick side. Nice spicy flavor. Not excellent but good and i prob picked the first 2 too early in my excitement. They went from green and nut sized to purple and cherry sized in about 5 days. this is a pic of one of the 2 that are not yet ready yet. will try and leave these babes on the tree longer. hoping for more fruit soon!

I live near Haddonfield, in Camden county, NJ and am trying my hand at growing figs for the first time this year. I got one tree (variety unknown - maybe Celeste?) at a local farmer's market last September. Per instructions I left it outside 'til the leaves fell and then wintered it over in the basement - but it started growing! Anxious to get it in the ground I made the mistake of planting it in the side yard (western exposure) in early April. We'd had some quite warm weather that fooled me into thinking spring had come early. It had not. The tree suffered terribly in a windstorm with sustained winds over 40 mph and the snow that hit a week later. losing all its leaves and killing the growing tips of all the shoots. The good news is that the tree sprouted new shoots from four of the five "trunks". It is now doing just fine and enjoying a bit of a growth spurt, although I'll be surprised if it yields any fruit this season. Today I purchased a second fig tree. This one is a Hardy Chicago from Lowe's. I put it into a 12" plastic pot where it will stay for at least the first year or so. I plan on bringing this one into my enclosed but unheated porch next winter. A friend and neighbor also has a fig tree of unknown variety that has survived one winter outdoors. I'll try and get a cutting or two from her to plant next year. I look forward to seeing which one performs best for me.

lamb abbey. If you are interested in growing fruit trees in Me and old varities...of course you've heard of Fedco! I have a Black Oxford and a Blue Pearmain from Fedco. I happen to prefer standard size trees as they look to me more like the antique apples they are and they grow to a deer proof height after a few years. Have you read "The Apples of Maine" by George Stilphen? He often speaks at Maine Apple Day and is a wealth of knowledge on the subject of growing apples and old varieties in particular. Also, have you heard of St. Lawrence Nurseries in N.Y.? They carry a very good selection of hard to find antique apple and pear varietes. I found the apple Striped Harvey as well as winter hardy white mulberries and a Cabot pear. They do have a website and a nice little catalog. Aside from the perils of deer, borers are a problem particularly if you get sloppy and don't keep grass and weeds clear of the trunk of your young apples. I found out the hard way and being an organic grower I spent hours with a long piece of flexible wire "fishing" for the grubs that tunnel down to the roots..no doubt to the amusement of my neighbors! Seriously, they can do a lot of damage or kill young trees. Pear trees are a good choice for Maine. You can grow sour pie cherries if you select a well drained South sloping site. Deer do not nibble my pear trees, and I'm not sure why but it's worth keeping in mind.

My Jabo is now blooming for the second this year(its 61/2 years old). I have it in the house again since the end of Sept. Seems like jabos produce many more flowers than fruit. Mine has only 3 berries this time. But it flowers and puts out new growth nicely under artificial light(I have 4-27 Watt CFL bulbs on top and 1-35 Watt CFL bulb at the bottom of the plant). The strange thing is, that when I had it outside during the summer, it didn't grow at all. Maybe it requires more constant day and night temperatures. Daytime temperatures in summer here are in the 25-33 Celsius(76-90 Fahrenheit) range whereas nighttime lows dip into the mid teens Celsius(upper fifties Fahrenheit).The difference maybe too much to keep the soil warm enough to grow the plant. The plant is now 3/12 feet tall and I expect it to flower and produce fruit every year. It's planted in a 10 gal. pot. I'd would appreciate if other members would share info about growing their jabos.

Is that 3 years from seed or from when you bought the tree? The tree looks huge if it's only 3 years from seed. Nice job on the fruit. I thought the jaboticaba's were pretty good when I tried them at excalibur last year.

Awesome! Any tips on how you did that so early? I just repotted my Jabo into a 3 gallon (peat/perlite/compost) so I'm guessing it has a ways to go.

alot of flooding in the spring usually causes jaboticaba to fruit.

are there any signs of cauliforous fruiting at all or are they all on the branches?

you might have one of the rarest Jaboticabas in the States, lol.

Mango kush- actually, i have a fruiting mangosteen, rambutan and lonkong tree in my backyard. I harvest several hundred pounds of fruit from each. They are unusual varities that can handle NY winters. Will post some pics once i resolve my camera problems.

lycheeluva, can you post pictures of your fruited mangosteen tree? Im pretty sure you dont have the real Garcinia mangostana/purple mangosteen. If so, please prove me wrong. Thanks!

curious as to the variety ?

Mine is Cauliflora / Red / Hybrid

got it from Pine Island Nursery as a 3gal a year and a half ago.

its fruited 3 times already... just 5-6 fruits at a time

but its faster than i was prepared for. Now i need to put it in ground. trouble is finding an area with full sun, BUT, will not let the plant dry out if it doesnt rain in a few weeks time.

i put 3 of the seeds in my seed-tray

and BAM... all 3 germinated...
