Pictures of plants I 'adopted' at the Scotia Exchange last year

I just started a new folder for the plants I brought home last year from the Scotia Exchange. Have many more to add--as they will be blooming. Thanks everyone.

Wow Anne_Marie,
Your attention to detail and your organizational abilities are amazing . I consider myself accomplished when I get them out of the containers and into the ground. Having said that I am truly grateful for all the great plants I received last year at the swap and am looking forward to seeing all of you again and some new faces.

Toxcrusadr, While never having spoken (conversed) with you before I have read some of your posts and am happy to be able to share a few thoughts with you. As has been stated earlier in this thread, I did my best to keep things simple but do not feel that limit necessary with you, the pleasure is mine. The reason your limit of familiarity with "colloidal humus compost" is due to the fact that the author of the book spoken of coined the phrase is my understanding. Each term stands on its own; however in the original discussion that was the name given to the substance at the time and it has stuck. Humus can develop colloidal properties, yet compost cant; compost can lead to humus, yet humus cannot lead to compost. "Humic substances are key components of a friable (loose) soil structure. Various carbon containing humic substances are key components of soil crumbs (aggregates). Complex carbohydrates synthesized by bacteria and humic substances function together with clay and silt to form soil aggregate. As the humic substances become intimately associated with the mineral fraction of the soil, colloidal complexes of humus-clay and humus-silt aggregates are formed. These aggregates are formed by electrical processes, which increase the cohesive forces that cause very fine soil particles and clay components to attract each other. Once formed these aggregates help create a desirable crumb structure in the top soil, making it more friable." (See link below) While I do enjoy making compost, my larger focus is allowing said compost to develop the largest amount of humic and fulvic acid as possible. And too, auxins, cytokinins, and other grown hormones and enzymes can be present and ready to go to work once the compost is applied to the soil. It is for this reason I constantly stress allowing ones compost be allowed to cure/mature. Those of us who have developed soil with such an organic foundation find we grow plants that refuse to die. As an example, those "Georgia collard greens" in the photo above will live well past a year, growing a stalk over three (3) feet tall, and will harvest collards with a taste to die for. I do have a different understanding of the nature of humic and fulvic acid, with fulvic being much smaller than humic, thus is the main carrier of nutrition in foliar sprays. Fulvic acid and the many wonderful functions it provides for all life on earth is one of my favorite topics so all I will say for now is that once our planet has replaced both fulvic and humic acid in our soils our health will be akin to those collards I just spoke of, in human time. Jandey, whenever you see new growth, about 2 weeks. You can remove the plastic and water, wait another week before remove the tape around the scion. You said, you graft 2 months ago? It is still too early to do any graft..(if you in Texas)..I always wait until the weather is hot, around May or June (after my plants finish with blooming season). It needs humidity for grafts to take. Marie

Laperouse, I'm afraid I've traded all I had already, and I'm actually not growing them this time. I liked them fine, but I have so many new things that I want to a try, that I'm not doing many of the things I grew last year. One thing I AM doing is those gorgeous Profusion Apricot Zinnias. Carrie, it was your pictures last year that made me put that one on my must have list too. I may try to save some seeds and just see what happens next year. Maybe I'll buy one pack as a back-up. Laurel, I can just picture some candles sitting on the hearth of that fireplace, and you guys sitting around it in the evening with a cold glass of lemonade, admiring your gardens. That Maltese Cross is stunning. I'm WSing a shorter version of that this year. It's called Lychnis 'Lumina Bronzeleaf Red' which I got from Specialty Perennials (let's hope it was worth the wait, LOL!). Bonnie

I agree that it sounds like scale. My own experience with scale has been extremely negative. Ordinary sprays like Safer's don't get rid of it, and you need special sprays for it that often cause the plant to completely defoliate. After that it's almost certain to get root rot, and etc. I would not take a plant like that in, myself. The scale spreads very rapidly and can spread to other plants. Spend your energies on a healthy plant instead of your neighbors cast off is imo.

I can't beleive the next swap is in 2 weeks....seems like we have been waiting a year for it and as a matter of fact we have. For those who are on the fence about going or haven't been before go to my link below for some of last year's photos compliments of Toplady.

Wow! Looks like there were a TON of plants. I have a feeling I'm going to feel pretty silly showing up with my measly little box of winter sown seedlings. I'll make up for it next year when its time to divide and thin out! I'm getting very excited....lets hope we've gotten all the rain out of the way.

Hi Anne Marie - I have been surfing and it seems Ajuga is very invasive. Is this so? I have a very wet area that can use some invasion..... Are you happy with it?

Carol.... I LOVE my ajuga!!! It is the first one that I haven't killed!!!! Very grateful to Shimla! I had tried twice already. It is a gorgeous blue/purple, and big spikes. The area it is in is pretty shady and 'dry' because of the maple trees (a struggle to grow anything under a Norway maple). I have taken extra care of it, and I'm very proud it has survived. It has not become invasive (yet). I could try to bring you some if you want.

Thanks, Kareen, for the Exchange pictures. Is anyone going to have a camera? I'll bring mine, but it is not digital... I must be the last person in America not to have a cell phone and use a 28 year-old camera!!!! LOL!

Deb.. I'm looking forward to seeing your WS babies... This is the size I like.. until you see how much they grow the following year.. Then, it is time to dig up, divide, share..

ANNE-MARIE and KAREEN: Thanks for sharing your pictures with us all!!

TO DEB and any other "NEWBIES" coming to the exchange on the 11th:

DON'T WORRY about not having a lot to bring this year... since I was so new at it last year all I could bring were a dozen plastic pots...and people were all so friendly and encouraging when they didn't see many of my sticks in plants that I wanted (I felt funny taking but not giving) that I ended up with more wonderful plants than I could count.

In fact, Shimla, if I remember correctly, you were pushing plants at everyone at the end of the day - "sure you can't take just one more?" - LOL - because no one wanted to take home again what they had brought to give away!! I was one of the 3 human inhabitants of the green subaru that was stuffed to the gills with new plants...we couldn't have squeezed in even one more plant!! I only wish someone had thought to take a picture as we loaded up and drove away...what a sight we were!! ha, ha!

I'll bring my digital camera this year to record the event for posterity! I'll just have to have someone show me how to get them off the memory stick and onto the web!

Anyway, the point is that regardless of how much you have to share, I think I can speak for anyone who was at last year's exchange... "come, meet everyone, relax, laugh, eat, and trade" and you'll enjoy the day, right girls??!
